Title: Lotus Cars
Post by: Lizzie_Zoom on 22 September 2008, 00:03:08
After some of us hijacking the SWMNBO "Opps' Never going to live this down thread", I will continue the subject of the Lotus sports cars in Wills Gold Leaf colours red / gold.

The nearest picture I can find after trawling through a load of photo's is this:

This is a 1971 Lotus Elite Sprint, in almost the colours I remember, but without a solid band of gold down to the under panels below the red. ;)

Can others remeber these and can provide true pictures of the cars this struggling lady is thinking of?? :-/ :-/

Why is it I also seem to recall another Lotus Sports Car - the Europa - being similairly attired?? :-/ :-/

HS is a 2.3 twin cam, the HSR is actually a 2.6 revamp, some in twin cam and some in single cam guise (for rallying)

Only 50 Factory HSR produced, all twin cams

Don't know about that, but I find it a great drive as it has wonderful road holding, lovely sounding engine, and cute vanity mirrors on the sides of a stunning black body, which no current police car can catch! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

The HS was a twin cam - 16 valve. the only difference under the bonnet between the 2 was that the HSR had dellorto carbs as standard.
The HS had 175 strombergs as standard, but when they were changed for twin 48 dellortos with a blydenstien tubular ex,manifold and lumenition ignition, the power went up from 135bhp to abot 170.

The F1 car looks like sennas old turbo car that he won his first F1 races in (89t ?)
No skirts they were banned long before this.
The fan car was a Brabham (alfa engine iirc) driven by Niki Lauda (1979 ?)

We had both cars at work.

The Lotus Sunbem gearbox was shocking, I went out in it as a passenger, couldnt stop the wheels spinnig in the 1st 3 gears.

The HS, was slowly modified into a works rally car.  went from the standard 135 BHP to a firebreathing 240 BHP.  It got writeen off but all the parts were refitted into a strengthened HSR bodied shell.  From what I can remeber the engine had the stroker kit fitted but it seemed to perform better on a single cam head from what I can remember (very vague though) think they got it upto 260 BHP at the wheels on the rolling road.

Some interesting cars at work arround that time.  His Brother won his class in the Lombard RAC in a MK2 Escort BDG.

Then the guy with the HS went on to a works Ascona 400 and on to a 6R4

I think the sunbeam had the ZF box .the HS had a getrag box -good gearbox but the dog leg 1st was a bit of a pain, and the standard gearshift arrangement was crap. The stick came off in my hand many times.

Sunbeams were 155bhp standard and around 200bhp with mild tuning.

I have seen a 1600 push rod knocking out 150 at the wheels!

Wouldnt be able to write a description of the test drive we went, the car had 80 miles on the clock and was on loan to see if the MD was wanting one for his wife.

Put it this way, it had new rear tyres on it the next day.   ::) ::) :y

They were very light, that's why. Great little cars let down by the Twin Cam which was Ok while it was running but a pain in the @rse when it broke, which it did regularly.

Compare it with an MX-5 and you're not really comparilng like with like. An MX-5 would need 200 BHP plus to get near Elan performance because it is so much heavier. It's clear to see the incluence the Elan had on the MX's design though.

Then again, the Elan's chassis didn't offer a great deal of side impact protection.  :o

Lizzie,

the Lotus Europa you are thinking of, was the black, with gold coachlining, and was the 'JPS' (John Player Special). These were made when the old Colin Chapman lotus F1 racing team were the world champions, and their F1 cars were the same livery. (there used to be one at Beaulieu Motor Museum)
The europas were a limited edition, and had three 'champion car constructors' badges on the rear end, as lotus won the constructors medal for three out of four years in the late sixties/early seventies.

Mate of mine has a Europa with a tuned C20XE on twin webbers. Boy does it go! :-* When it goes at all, that is. ::)

Last time I saw it most of the exhaust had disintegrated so it sounded "a bit fruity" too. ;D Rear and side visibility is nonexistant and gear changes were seemingly eased by the muttering of a few choice words under the breath with each downshift.  ;D
