Title: tool sets
Post by: MaxV6 on 23 September 2008, 10:00:45
right... what with Miggys having all these weird splined/torx style bolts... where 's the best place to get a sensibly priced set, sufficiently complete  to think about Cam belt and aux belt replacement??
\

???

I'm not really desperately keen to spend a week on my back afterwards, but it's due doing....   and i'm buggered if i'm gonna give VX dealers (Bell-enders.. ) another opportunity to screw up my elite.

also....    what's the score on replacing the bearings in an air con compressor??    or should I just bite the bullet and geta replacement one fitted?

Torx bolts - youll need set of torx sockets (female) + torx drivers (male) - can be found on ebay.  Only need 15mm ordinary socket for aux belt replacement.

[edit]Aux belt - 1 torx socket req to remove bolt holding air con pipe to bracket to allow aux belt to come out/go back in![/edit]

Air con compressor - bugger to get out - new replacement expensive - try for good used from one of the breakers on here (I paid £45 for a good one)

If you're starting from scratch the good old Halfrauds kit will have pretty much everything you'll need but buy it when it's discounted to 99 quid (ish?).

Otherwise, if you have a good selection of ratchets and extension bars, etc, just get a rail of torx sockets (female "E10 .. E14 3/8" drive will cover most sizes IIRC, although the crank pulley is E20 IIRC). Can't remember if there are any male torx fasteners. If so a selection of "T" sockets as well. I have a set of each on a rail from the Halfrauds professional range and they've been fine.

You'll need a locking kit and 30mm offset ring spanner as well, of course.

Can't think of anything else obscure that you'll need.

It's a good opportunity to change the water pump and do a coolant change, of course.
