Title: First time you drove a car
Post by: pete.h on 24 September 2008, 05:27:28
Following on from the thread by mars , can anyone remember the first time they drove a car (not just in and out the garage for your dad ).
Mine was on Southport beach when I was about 10  in my uncle's   Wolsley . Got to about 30 in 2nd , seemed like 130 !

The Wolsley looked like an Austin Cambridge , anyone remember what they were called ?  Something / something ?

That's the one.  I remember it had blue leather seats and wooden picnic tables on the back of the front seats.  Lot posher than my old man's Victor

 ;D

I remember driving round a camp site on my dad's lap in his Triumph Herald 8-) when I was about 5.

First proper drive was 21 years ago yesterday - my 17th birthday. My dad did the fatherly thing and slapped some "L" plates on my mum's Volvo 340 8-) and took me out for my first driving lesson. Let's just say he didn't repeat the favour for either of my two younger brothers. Neither did he get in a car with me driving again for quite some time. :-[

I all honesty, he could have picked a more appropriate bit of road to hand over the reigns but I guess he figured a twisty country lane on a dark September evening would have at least been quiet.

Unfortunately I (well, both of us, I suspect) totally misjudged one of the bends and negotiated it sideways, somehow regaining control and missing the oncoming car.

End of driving lesson no.1. :o

Stolen Viva HB aged 6.
Had to put blocks on my shoes to reach the pedals.
Very scary ....needed a fag to calm down afterwards. :y :y

When I was 17, my Dad didn't have a car - we lived on the Charing Cross Road and even in 1963, you couldn't park there!

So my first drive was in a BSM car.  Kings Cross branch, at 5 o'clock on a wet winter's evening.  We sat in a traffic jam on the Pentonville Road for 30 minutes before managing to get to a deserted industrial area where I was shown how to do a three-point turn.

What a bloody waste of 17/6!

in the early to mid 80's there was something called the Shell young drivers club, membership was open to youngsters aged 12+ and you had to have parental guidance.

Most of the time it was disused airstrips, the occasional racing circuit and open spaces, but the principle was youngsters were taught to drive in a responsible manner and learnt how to handle a car.

I could drive from the age of 13, i used to attend a lot of these sessions, they were great fun......i had to wait until i was 17 to drive on the road though  ::)

I was 12 at the time, I used to go with my mate and his dad to stock car racing, his dad always had a Zephyr 6, but raced various cars. I can remember at this particular time he was racing a Ford Anglia, (I can even remember it been a $hitty green colour). Now this would'nt happen by todays standards, but at that time, it was more or less.......well who's to know. His dad raced the Anglia, then so did my mate, there was still some life left in it after being battered round the track by old Rover P5's and the likes. My mate talked his dad into letting me drive in the next race, I say race, it was more like a one for all round an oval mud track. I'd never driven before, never mind raced, but got the bottle from somewhere to get in next , so to speak.

I did'nt need clutch control or anything, I constantly got rammed and shoooooved round that track for the whole race, can't remember how many laps. It was fun, but also scary, but atleast I did'nt get rolled  :o

This sort of thing when I was 12, is unheard of today, and no doubt very illegal  ;D, those were the days.

For the young one's of today........... this is a Ford Anglia

Pushed around the track by the Rover P5

You can still race at 12 in Autograss racing but you're limited to racing against other 12 to 16 year olds, mainly in more or less standard Mini 1000's. Nowhere near as scary as what you were doing , but good fun, 45mph on mud with 7 other cars can get a bit hairy.

My first "real drive" was as a 10 year old on a, thankfully, deserted beach--- careering towards a cliff with dad screaming "Turn the bloody wheel" in my left ear --- actually that was the first time I had heard him swear too!!  ::)

At the age of 10 i was in the Pulborough (W. Sx) Sea Scouts & my dad was a leader. One saturday he borrowed the Ford Thames Van/Bus to collect some slabs but the battery was low. On finding a rope he sat me in the Thames, ign on, choke half out, attactched the rope to back of his new 1600L Mk3 tina & told me what to do. I did fine, got it started but forgot about the clutch when i wanted to stop so throttled it again to stop it stalling, braked again to avoid hitting his new tina. Got the hang of it after being told again & within an hour he had me reversing in & out of tyres he put in the yard. Later he let me have a go in the tina as well. The Thames was a grey 62/63 B reg (pre Transit) 3 speed colunm change, pus ::)h button start!

First car I drove was my dads Austin 7 when I was 7 he used to let me drive it up the back alleyway every night so it could be put in the garage,he also did the same with his Morris 8 Series E, I learned to drive partly in his Ford Prefect 100E and a driving school Austin A40 with dual controls which included dual steering wheels, that was spooky when you turned the wheel.

First drive was on a dirt road next to Kenfig pool (Mid Glamorgan) in my Dad's Morris Minor 1000. I was 13 at the time. Must have made a mess of it though because it was the one and only time that he let me drive his car, :( Oddly I could ride his Triumph Bonneville or Tiger 90 and he never batted an eyelid. But they used to scare me rigid and I tried to hide that from him. :-[

My first opportunity was in a BSM mini at the age of 17 in 1970, around Bromley, Kent, but then afterwards scarring the pants off my dad by driving his company (I worked for them as well) owned Mk2 Cortina at 70 on the old A2 with the 'L' plates flapping in the wind!!

I never forget his shouts of "bloody slow down Mary" (my first name is Mary, but in adult life I prefere my second name Elizabeth / Lizzie / Liz ) with his eyes full of fear!! :o :o :o :o :o :o   Poor dad!! :( ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

Like so many of us my first drive was aged about 7 or 8 sat on my dad's knee, Mk1 Cortina drove around Clumber Park.

Aged 11 / 12 used to get my Dad to take me to the small, local Industrial Estate, on a Sunday and let me drive around. A ford Corsair for the most part. I did the same thing with my little brother some years later. ::)

13 had my first car to play with, used to drive it around a farmers field. ;D

15 I had a Fiat 600, could get it into 2nd gear on the drive and sometimes used to sneak it up the road. :-X

15 used to do Auto testing in a Triumph Jerald / Morris 1000 in the HMS Ganges Motor Club. ;D

17 passed my test :y :y :y

I drove a Redlands 32 ton Scammel tipper sat on my Dad's lap on the M4 at Chievely before it was open. I guess I was about 9 or 10..? He used to pick aggregate up from Nuneaton in Somerset and bring it up for (I guess) the A34.

First car I drove properly was his Mk1 Cortina estate on an old airfield somewhere in the New Forest, aged 9. CRX 783 B. My Mum was in the car at the time and she is still shocked by it, after all these years.

A cream VW Beetle which was about 18 years old at the time.  I passed my test in it!  It was really hard to park at the supermarket.  The power assisted steering wasn't working very well! ;D

Yes but we go back to the olden days, No H&S worries, I remember sitting on a trailer on top of all the bales of straw, so quite high, going from the field back to the farm. :y
