Driving down the M25 a few nights ago and came across an Aston Martin, it was dark but the shape was DB4/5/6, so i slowed down as i was overtaking it and wound the passenger window down, the sound was sublime.....the hairs stood up on the back of my neck....
Today driving home i passed an old Jag XK140, again, window down, slowly passing it and enjoying the noise.....
911's Astons, Yank 'sports' cars, older Jags, even the Audi 5 Cyl all have the same reaction, if one is passing i will wind the window down, no matter the weather, just to enjoy the engine note.
Modern Ferraris are to high pitched, they sound like they are being tortured, subaru flat 4s are too common now...
does anyone else do this or am i really a saddo :-/
-
I must be sad too, or maybe really sad as I love to hear a tortured Italian lump. ::) ::) :y

now Alfa make not only a fantastic looking V6, but one that sounds great as well, the Brusso V6 is great, and when it is 'on song' it has the ability to cause 'trouser accidents' :y
i love the 70's and 80's Italian V6's and V8's, they just sound operatic
-
I am a bugga and love the sound of a nice gurgly V8, have heard a few tuned Chevys that sound like off shore power boats just on tickover.
Saying that, my V6 GLS sounds well (Back box split/exploded) so I left it. Sounds awsome. ::) ::) :y
-
missed the sound of my 3.0 v6, but would prefer the later mustang V8
-
Subaru flat 4's always sound bloody awful to me and even worse on tickover!
The Ferraris are to high revving a racey!

I agree. Makes me want to get my spark plug wrench out. They can't be running on all 4 and sound that ropey, surely? ;)

not sad at all.
my wife enjoys the sound of a decent engine
-
I always liked the sound of a Beetle, you could always tell if one was coming. Don't like any of these modern 3 cylinder jobs , they just sound like they're misfiring.

A security guard on a business park has one......looks mint and looks the part! red with 2 black strips running front to rear and sounds fantastic, if I catch him when he's moving it :y
-
A nice Burrrrbley V8 or a well tuned BDA / BDX does it
But just hearing the sound of a Mk2 Escort with 40 /45 DCOE's and a straight through bore is a sound I miss.
I had such a beast in the late 80's and still miss the fun aspect :y :y
-
Yeah, i do that & agree with most of the aforementioned motors. Don't forget a well tuned a series in a 1293/1340 mini running an LCB manifold, 270 or 285 cam through an RC40 exhaust & a straight cut box. They sound great when they come onto cam, little screamers!! 8-)
-
Nothing wrong with enjoying the sound of a nice motor. Is there a site you can host sound clips on? Maybe we should post up some and sit listening to 'em and all be 'sad' together. :y

I'd sit & listen to them, don't mind admitting it!!!! 8-) :D

Can't beat a TVR ticking over,luv it ::)

I love the sound of a nice motor. V8 is best but V6 with a good exhaust comes close second. ;) My missus calls me sad anyway, nothing to do with engine sounds! :'(

oh yes, now there's a sound i do remember.....one of the few 4 cylinder engines i like to listen to

was sat next to one a few weeks ago at the lights, window was down, he revved the engine a bit and caught me cocking my ear, so he let rip, now that was a nice sound :y

There is only one engine sound that really impresses me, stops me in my tracks and raises the hair on the back of my neck; the Merlin aircraft engine!! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y

Recently returned from hols in France. Went to a sort of revival meeting at the old Rheims circuit.
Everything there including blower Bentleys, Bugattis Ferraris etc etc. but the best sounding & the fastest thing there was a 60's Lister Jaguar.
With the XK engine at full chat echoing of the old concrete grandstands.
-
not really that into bikes but a v-twin harley with straight through short pipes.

i can't argue with you, one of the most individual engine noises i have ever heard, and even today, like you, makes the hair on the back of my neck stand.......

"The engine is the same as installed in many fighter and bomber aircraft in the Second World War, such as the Spitfire and Lancaster. etc. This one was originally fitted in a Boulton-Paul trainer, is of 27 litres capacity and was rated at over 1.000 horse-power."
