Ah, but this egay auction implies that by adding a cheap small fan, you can get a zillion more horsepower, better mpg than a diesel Polo, and its all secret and new, hence car manufacturers aren't fitting it...

tossers.

F1 bans engine enhancements to slow cars down for safety (as all the drivers are too gay) and supposedly for more exciting racing, rather than governing the root of the boring racing - aerodynamics!

What????!!!!!! :o :o :o :o  I thought the aim of this (now boring) sport was to go as fast as technically possible? ::) ::) ::)

Actually I do remember TB something being said about this many years ago, with my F1 mad sister saying something about it :y

It all seems so crazy to me, but F1 seems totally that may to me anyway! :D :D :D ;)

Why are turbo's not fitted to all sporty / high performance cars though? :-/ :-/

The 1.5l turbos in the mid 80s were beating all the 3.5l normally aspirated at the time, so in effect you have 2 classes. So they banned the faster turbos.

Then a while ago, they made max engine size 3.0l as 3.5l were getting too quick.

Then last year, they banned V10 engines, as too fast, everything had to be V8.

The FIA is useless, and think that overtaking in pitstops is exciting.  Mind you, they - like the drivers - probably think its too dangerous to overtake on the track.

problem is turbos and superchargers combined with the multimillion technology make the game  really dangerous ..Many died..

So they start to limit the powers which also let them control the game
how they want >:(

You gotta admit 1500 or so bhp out of a Renault 5 sized engine is pretty impressive . Even the wife put down her maggy and looked at her shopping car with renewed interest .

The blocks BMW were using in their Turbo F1 cars were basically the same as you'll find in that gutless wonder the 318/518. In fact, they favoured second hand blocks for F1 because they were stronger, having been thermally cycled so many times, all the stresses in the block were gone. They took the stroke right down to make it rev to 11K+, and got 1,300 BHP out of them running "qualifying" boost (5.5 BAR  - 80PSI FFS! :o).

It wasn't the sort of engine you'd want on a wet roudabout, though. power went from 400 BHP to 800 BHP in the space of 1,000 RPM.

Just shows how conservatively rated car engines are - or how much power you can get out of them if they've only got to last one flying lap. Then again, all parts other than the block would have been pretty exotic to achieve that.

I have seen one - they had one in at the garage my dad used to work at (display in the showroom), they used to let the blocks weather outside as well.

This is a picture of a racing car they had and the driver ended up in F1
