One project i am looking to apply for requires me applying for SC level clearance.....
Now in my past (about 17 years ago) i had a little brush with the law, the outcome was a conditional discharge but i am concerned that the past will come back to haunt me, i have been open with the company concerned and told them of my history but does anyone know if a spent conviction for a minor issue would put paid to getting clearance?
it would be a shame as this is one project i would love to be involved with as it would take me abroad as well ;)

Not sure about that but I have just spent 3 days in Court, work wise, and some person has now screwed up their life and career for ever, one incident :(

I've been arrested and flagged many a time in the past, though no chargers have ever been brought against me.
I've been able to get a SIA lvl4 and cleared by the gamming Comisssion & LBOA for fraud investigation work.
Not sure if thats any help

A CD is a conviction so there for criminal record that will be with you for the rest of your life i'm affaid.. It will depend what the offence was with you trying to get clearance. In my younger days i used to enjoy a little bit of Football vilance (grown out of it now and know a lot better). its come back to haunt me many a time!!!

In my current job I had to sign the Official Secret's Act.
I had a small run in with the law when I was 18 or 19 (over 20 years ago)
I just admitted what I had done up front, and all was well.
My small run in with the law worked wonders on me an I grew up a lot, and have never been in trouble since. (speeding)

Its a criminal record, so they will look into that. I suspect it may harm your chances of high levels of clearance. Not sure about lower levels :-/

These things often come back and bite you in the backside, but generally only cause problems if you try to cover them up ---- depending on what it was for, naturally, it will usually be overlooked if admitted to upfront.
Most adults got up to things they shouldn't have done when they were youngsters and some were unfortunate enough to be caught doing it!

Used to be the case that minor criminial records were deleted after 5 years.
However after the Soham murders (about 2000), the law was changed and all past indescretions were left on your records.
As you were talking about 17 years ago, they may already have been removed, but if they were not removed before the Soham murders then they will remain on your record.
It is harder to leave your past behind now more than it used to be.
Apparently Ian Huntley had past criminal convictions deleted from his file, enabling him to get the job of School Caretaker.
Employers will normally they will overlook minor indescretions :y

mine was for receiving goods of a less than reputable heritage, i was caught up in something i had no knowledge, hence the Discharge rather than a fine/community service.
I have nothing to hide, i have been open about it, if it does come back to haunt me then que-se-ra-se-ra

I regularly apply for SC and CTC clearance for my soldiers. A conviction 17 years ago is not going to be a show stopper. They look at everything and do various checks, more into your background to make sure you actually are who you say you are and that you do not have any dubious connections, ie relatives that are russian or formerly IRA and all that. The SC check is not a CRB check.
I wouldent be too worried about it, I have known soldiers being convicted on assualt 10 years ago getting SC and CTC cleared. If you need any help filling out the form Im a bit of a ninja ;)
