Title: Done it again !!
Post by: HolyCount on 28 September 2008, 16:41:41
Just can't help myself!  I have just purchased two new vehicles  ::)

The first is the base for my buggy. Half the price of a new frame, and with suspension, wheels, one seat and an engine of unknown heritage thrown in ..........

The other ( and I feel I am going to get stick for this ) is really for SWMBO.  She decided, after playing with my donor mini, that she liked mini's, as do I. But I am not into the constant war you get with the mini against the dreaded tin worm they all come with. So I have got a fibreglass one! BTW it's not as pink as it looks in the pictures (that's the photochromatic light effect of pearlescent paint!)

Am hoping I can convince VOSA that the Domino is just re-shelling the donor mini and therefore get away without an SVA.

In my defence, the Domino is also going to be used as a marketing aid for my website  ::)

They both look very good and exciting HC as what I call 'fun' cars. :-* :y :y

They seem to be just asking to be taken for a fast spin around town, and at the maximum thrash on clear motorways. ;D ;D ;)

But I suppose only the 'mini' is street legal or is that what the difficulty with the VOSA is?? :-/ :-/ :-/

I think you may well be right Gaffers !!!!!

Lizzie -- the Freestyle ( yellow beastie) will be street legal once fully built and it has passed it's SVA (single vehicle approval ) test by VOSA.

The Domino might also have to pass an SVA -- but might be exempt because the manufacturing company had SVA approval as a manufacturer in 1997 --- don't know whether this still stands as the regulations changed in 1998! If it doesn't need SVA ( being basically a re-skinned mini) it will just need an MOT and then registering.

Ah, thanks HC! :y :y

But, sorry just one more question ::) ::)  does that mean the re-skinned mini still has its registration number for the original chassis? :-/ :-/

A mini with a fibre glass body......I guess there is a load of re-enforcing in the floor to overcome the lack off roof!

Sadly, that will only get round 50% of the rot areas!

I was watching the domino aswell and wondering whether to make an offer.

Didn't dare in the end cos of what the wife would say , and it is a NICE colour !

Hope you got it for a good price .

Good luck with them both.

Cheers Pete -- might need a bit of fettling for SVA (if VOSA say it needs one -- and they probably will!). In the end I paid 850 for it ( kit when new was £2400, without the extras -- I happen to have a brochure from 2004, when I originally wanted one)

Sounds like a good buy then.

What can you get Miniwise for 850 quid , a pile of rust covered with an even bigger pile of filler I should think.

ps. I was gonna offer him £500 , not because I didn't think it was worth more than that , but because I MIGHT have escaped with all my bits intact after I'd told the wife , if I'd got it for that price.

Hope the SVA goes OK , sharp edges seem to be the big thing up here and it doesn't look like there's many of them.

I tried £750 to start with, but he wasn't having that. After a dozen or so emails and a phone call got him to agree to £850.

As for SVA -- I think I will just have to check that the lights are in the right places (got to conform to modern regs, not those in force when the classic mini was in production). Radii all look to be OK ( but VOSA might know different!) and any sharp edges can be trimmed up easily. All moving parts are covered -- so, fingers crossed, all should be in order.

Got a feeling that there's something in the latest SVA about padded wheels and dash and maybe collapsible columns but I could be wrong , anyway the VOSA site has all the gen I think , as you probably know already !

Anyway, best of luck again !!
