Title: What tyres
Post by: SteveMJ on 02 September 2008, 21:31:32
One of my tyres is kissing the wear bars so I need a set of four, they have lasted about 21K miles - is this about right?

I have 3.2 V6 and had fitted Goodyear F1 GSD3 Y size 235 45 17 Mytyires.com have these for £91 each + fitting at ~£13.  Local dealers are about £104 to £177!! for these.  I've seen tyres advertised from £72 to £130 (ignore the £177) I feel these tyres are all that hold me down or back so consider them important to want a quality item.

What recomendations have you guys got for tyres?

Steve

I like the F1's, personally.  Had Dunlops before and were less than good for me on damp roads, but that was before the rear suspension was played with a tad....  No doubt others will also have a say too...  ;)

Running Dunlop Sport 9090's on my 3.2 with no complaints though I would say that there is a slight increase in road noise.

£85 each at Wheels in-motion (but I think they are due to go up now!)

I must admit I do like these Toyo's I have fitted :y

Nexen fitted all round on my Elite. Very little road noise and sticks well in the wet. Tyres almost seem to be a bit of a personal choice judging by the different brands being suggested. The only negative I can possibly think of with the Nexen is I think that you will get  less milage out of them than the big names but they are relatively cheap. :)

As you are not far from South Bucks, contact member here - wheels-inmotion - who is normally very competitive for tyres.

I tend to use Dunlop SP9090 or Conti Sport Contact 2s on MV6, with slight preference for Dunlops.

Have Nexen on the tractor, impressed, but bhas a tendency to aquaplane in standing water

I have used various tyres on my MV6.... All I have to say is DONT use Pirelli P-Zero, DONT use Fullrun (thats obvious I know) DONT use Khumho or however you spell it.

Pirelli only lasted about 8000-10000 miles for me with the last 2MM of tread disappearing to completely bald and canvass in places in just 2 weeks (500 miles)

Fullrun... are cheap. they dont grip and they dont last - admittedly my tracking was out by 1000% (yes one thousand) but they were illegal after 3000 miles

Khumho - even after wheels-inmotion played around with geometry understeer horribly. I got a good 50 yards of complete understeer at just 20 miles an hour a little while ago.

The only tires I have used that I have been at all impressed with are Marshall Matrack XM's. They're only about £65 but they have lasted well. I've done probably 8000 or 9000 miles on them (on the back) and they dont seem to be even half way down. They don't grip as well as they could - I can drift at about 30 mph if I stand on the throttle in second gear - but for tyres that are so cheap and last that well despite my.... less than perfect driving, I've been really impressed. Pirelli P zero dont grip any better than these do.

That's a cheap-skate's point of view anyway :)

Hi guys, thnaks for your inputs (I've been away for a week+, so haven't been around).

I'll be going for the Goodyear's again and propose to get them fitted in the office car park (saves me having a mega-long lunchbreak) via http://www.etyres.co.uk the fitted cost id £109.  So, for me an extra fiver per tyre is worth not having to drive and wait etc.

I've just emailed them with some minor queries (and to gauge their response).  Has anyone had any good or bad experiences with them?

Cheers, Steve

In your case, get some internet prices, then see what WIM can do - they are normally very competitive on the fully fitted price :y

I use with Conti SC2 or Dunlop SP9090, with a slight preference for the Dunlop.

Got cheap stuff on Tractor, seem OK until you have aquaplane amounts of water on the ground, then its a bit skittish...

Every day is a new adventure, and I can eat my favourite food and watch my favourite film repeatedly, and never get bored....

Royal Mail Customers services are about as much use as a used condom smeared in dogshit.  So who knows where the parcel is, as they certainly don't - and the automated ref number they emailed me when I did the online redeliver thingy is apparenetly invalid, and my postcode doesn't exist.  Tossers.

I've noticed you don't have much luck with postal services. ::)

Would you like to swap addresses with me? We seem to get letters for the whole rather street put through our door. >:(

I think it's because he parks his van outside our house, and then can't be @rsed to walk any further up the road.

I have a lot of time for RM.  But their customer services are a waste of space. Utterly pointless. If they are hard up, boot those tossers out to save cash.

Amshat, well, good bloody riddance.

Home Delivery Network or whatever they are called, wasters.

ShittyLink, they are good

DPD or whatever Parceline are called, no problems yet.

A follow up:

I had difficulty getting the Goodyear F1 GSD3, so got the GoodyearF1 asymetrics instead.  I bought 4 tyres and paid £96 each from http://www.camskill.co.uk/ and got them fitted locally for £40.  The asymetrics got good reviews on the web.

I think I saved about £60 compared with a straight visit to the local tyre dealer.

This may be of interest to some of you   :)

I have found that Bracknell Tyres are the cheapest place for tyres. I put Falkens on my Citroen C5 estate and they were pretty good. Not sure how good they would be on a miggy.
