Title: back from WIM again.....
Post by: tunnie on 27 September 2008, 15:26:51
... and another transformation!

After i had the geometry done, i still had vibration through the wheel, it was slight at 60, none after till a little at 80, then got a bit worse.

Had a lot of vibration through the seat 80-90, but none below that, so i suspected wheel balancing.

So off i went..

Popped the wheels on their machine, now i am not sure what the numbers meant on the screen, what values they represented.

But drivers front was 60 / 45 - Guys response was that would give a train vibration!  ;D

They also had to weights, in different locations on the wheels. Rest of the wheels were about 40 out.

On the way back it was totally transformed, it was dead smoooth well into 100+ (WIM have a big test track  ::))

Standard cruise speed around 80-90 where i had vibration before, its allll gone!  :)

Very happy  :)

I was getting quite bad steering wheel shaking  between 50-70mph on the TD estate. It seemed to have got worse over the last few months. It also was shaking slightly at low speeds as well. All the tyres were more or less ready for replacement (the fronts still had around 3-4mm on them though) When I bought the car I had all the wheels rebalanced, which improved the shaking but not cured it.
I went to a local recommended  tyre fitters and they have now transformed the cars ride, I did have new tyres on all round and they did a proper balancing job as well, smooth ride at any speed now.

Do WIM balance by the centre of the wheel or the stud holes?

Glad you got it sorted tunnie  :y

It suprises me how much tyres differ balancing wise.......

When I had Nankangs NS2's on ... the tyres balanced no problem using stick on weights.......which i prefer for alloys...

The current tyres I have on (which seem to be ok at the moment) wouldnt balance using stick on weights...(2 different tyre fitters had a go) In the end they explained the problem.....and asked if they could bang on some on the outside......which i agreed to.....then balanced fine......dunno why the prob  :-/

GOOD GRIEF!!!!!!!!! Them numbers are the same as an average 4 x 4 wheel balance have you got a set of cheap tyres on the car?thats the only thing that would cause it to be that far out!!!

My rears are nearly out 15,000 miles, Michelins and they are more or less flat but I wondered why I was able to get the rear out on a local roundabout when I had a numpty following too closely

Still, 15k is not a lot, must be all that burger van pulling.

Father tunnie got 50k out his.

RWD car with decent weight balance, you should see 25k easy! - All the rears do is drive, you must do a lot of booting it at roundabouts.

Surely they can be straightened? Ive had bike wheels with big dings/bends in the rim repaired before. Rule is as long as its not cracked they can sort it on a bike, thinking about it wim do a refurb service, weather that includes straitening or just cosmetic i dont know. Must be able to sort that one somehow.

We only get 15k out of a set of our rears, but it too tows everywhere with a fair bit of weight over the back. Michelin tyres pretty good. Just put on some avons for a cheap change, see how they fair  ::)
