Some of you may have noticed a visit from 'Oilman' giving advice on oils and answering a few FAQ's (the post has been moved to the FAQ area).
This information comes from Guy at Opieoils and is a result of registering the forum with them.
This has two benefits
1) We get good oil advice which will be built up into a reference in the FAQ area.
2) If you register on their site you will find that you can select Omega-owners as the preferred forum.
Number 2 is important because this automatically gives you a discount on their already very competitive prices.
Opieoils is a company I have been mentioning for some time as they have some VERY good products at excellent prices (i.e. Dex3 ATF, diff oil etc).
So, register on the site and save yourself some of the hard earned cash on the superb range of products which will help keep your Omega (and Astra STMO123!) in top working order.

OPIE's Web site asks for a forum membership number when you apply. It may be worth posting a clarification of what should be entered here as we do not appear to have such a thing.

Well, I could have left instructions for the Amtrak bloke to leave it in the sump of my AR35 but I hate to think what I'd have come home to. ::)

Apparently, everything I ever order and is delivered by Amtrak must be dangerous, as every single time it causes the driver to crash, and hence not deliver. And we're not just talking once or twice here either.
-
If you have had troule with Amtrak we also use Business Post, we can send via them but are just as bad IMO.

Do you know what oil should be used in the R25 and R28 manual gearbox on the Omega?
-
Could do with some more info on these, just comes up with a GM part number.
I know its a 75w, synthetic. I dont know if it is GL4 or GL5 yet?
Cheers
Guy.

I have some GM stuff at home, will check the bottle to see if there are any further details.
-
Ideal, hopefully it will have some more info :)

Some more details:
Transmission fluid, SAE E80 Part Number 1940768
I have requested the COSH data to see if that gives some more info.

Good man, keep it coming.

OK, I've registered on opieoils.co.uk as a member of the Omega Owners Forum (OOF) and have done a search on my car: Standard Omega Elite 3.2 24v V6 Automatic 2001 'Y' plate.
I'm just about to do full service and need:
- Engine oil + filter
- ATF fluid (full replace + flush x3 volumes required)
- Brake fluid
- Coolant (? Do you do this?)
I'd like the best available and have a few questions:
Engine Oil + Filter
Your site recommends the Oil and Filter Service Pack VXSP15309B - 6 litres of Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5w-40 and 1 Purolator Oil, but is the more expensive "Silkolene PRO S 5W-40 Ester Synthetic Oil For High Performance Engines" any better or even worth it?
Which of the following is best? (Filter required, best recommendations appreciated)
- Fuchs TITAN SUPERSYN 5W-40 High Performance, Fully Synthetic, Engine Oil
- Mobil Synt S 5W-40 Superior performance synthetic engine oil
- Motul 8100 X-cess 5W-40 Gasoline and Diesel engine oil 100% Synthetic
- REDLINE High Performance Synthetic Motor Oil 5w-40
- Amsoil Synthetic Engine Oil (AFL) 5w-40 European Formula
- Silkolene PRO S 5W-40 Ester Synthetic Oil For High Performance Engines
ATF
Bearing in mind I plan to drain (50% is the most you can drain at any one time) then top up, run for 500 miles, drain & top up, repeat 1 last 3rd time to flush the auto-box sytem through and I'm guessing that what's in there now is the standard GM ATF, which of the folowing 5 from your site would you recommend?
- Amsoil Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF
- Castrol TQ DIII Automatic Transmission Fluid meeting Dexron III
- Fuchs TITAN ATF 3353 Automatic Transmission Fluid
- Motul DEXRON III Fluid for automatic gearboxes, Power steering systems
- REDLINE D4 Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid
Final Drive oil
Is this worth doing, and, if so, which is better? (My car is standard which is not LSD as far as I know)
- Silkolene BOA 90 LS High Performance Gear And Limited Slip Differential Oil
- Motul 90 PA Lubricant limited slip differential (LSD) Extreme pressure
Brake Fluid
Again this is a full change; which one do you recommend?
- Castrol Response Dot 4 Synthetic Brake Fluid
- MOTUL DOT 4 BRAKE FLUID 100% synthetic fluid for hydraulic actuated-brake and clutch systems DOT 4
- Silkolene DOT 4 Universal Brake & Clutch Fluid
How does the price of your (OOF discounted) Opie Oils stuff compare to VX standard oils if you have a VX trade card?
Sorry for all the questions, and thanks in advance.
-
I think Fuchs titan 4000 is the ATF to use on the Omega.
Engine and diff oil don't really need to be anything special and you don't need an LSD oil if yours is an open diff. Any EP90 hypoid oil should be OK. Bear in mind that the diff doesn't have a drain plug so it's hassle draining it. I'd be inclined to just keep it topped up unless it's done intergalactic mileage. I would have thought the 3.2 would benefit from a 5w30 oil if you're going fully synthetic.
Coolant should be long life 5 year stuff. The GM stuff is good value.
I believe synthetic brake fluid needs to be used with care. Can't remember details so I'll let Guy advise but I believe it's not compatible with mineral fluid - however, if it's sold as DOT 4 maybe that's not the case? Maybe I'm thinking of silicone fluid? Unless you're going to be using the car on track and getting the brakes very hot, a vanilla DOT 4 should be fine.
Kevin
-
If the fluid is DOT4 then it HAS to be able to be mixed with other fluids this is a condition of the DOT 4 spec.
However, even so, silicone fluid is not recommended in mineral systems as it ha been known to cause problems with the brake seals. As said, a mineral DOT 4 fluid will be just fine.
-
Yep dot4 will mix with dot3 and dot5.1 which are all glycol based.
Steer clear of dot5 as this is silicone based, will not mix with other brake fluids but not very common so you are unlikely just to come accross it.
Cheers
Guy.

Just got the spec for manual gearbox oil
Its: SAE75W-85 API GL4.....its the same as that used in Agilas and Vectra C...
