I thought I caught on the news today (wasn't paying attention as my rear tyres demand 99.5% attention in the wet at the moment ::)) that someone has claimed to have found some remains.
I thought it odd at the time that a man and an aircraft can disappear so comprehensively by accident.

Does anyone recall the story that went around about 12 years ago about an American pilot that fitted a J.A.T.S.O (i think it was called that) to his car. The story was, he wore his tyres & brakes out trying to stop the thing & they found what was left of him & his car inbedded in a hill side.

I note they have now found his plane and are searching for the body......

I don't believe the disappearance of Steve Fossett has anything to do with conspiracies, but everything to do with an adventurous man of aviation. 8-) 8-)
Flying can be dangerous anyway, but every so often aviators just disappear due to a multitude of circumstances and bad luck. It happened to Amelia Earhart in July 1937, Amy Johnson in 1941, Glenn Miller, the band leader, and his pilot in December 1944, a whole flight of five TBM Avengers, the infamous "Flight 19", in December 1945, and more recently in July 1999 John Kennedy with his wife, until their bodies and the wreckage of their plane were found. :'( :'( :'( A multitude of craft have disappeared since and before these particular noteworthy cases.
When you are flying alone, in a small aircraft, and even in a flight of five, you can easily disappear in what is actually a huge expanse of the World's surface. :( :(
They have found the wreckage of Steve's plane, but the animals have no doubt taken his body! :'( :'(

Me neither, Lizzie. I happened upon the story by chance. Having said that, it is curious as to why his emergency beacon was not picked up (or did not operate). Either way, it looks like "misadventure".

Part of me lives in hope that he packed a parachute and is now entertaining his mistresses on the same sunny beach as Lord Lucan.
The other part says - 'look under the plane guys..'

Urban Myth ... :( The bottles are JATO (Jet Assisted Take Off) and are attched to a C130 Hercules aircraft to allow the use of very short runways.

If it were fitted with one. I doubt it'd be mandatory on a light aircraft.
