Title: What a day!! Need to rob a bank!!
Post by: richardirv on 04 October 2008, 08:59:21
I needed new pads, markeymark kindly offered to do them for me!

on the way my exhasust split at the join to the back box!!  :'(

then after travelling 55 miles to marks house he realised I needed new discs! luckily his local auto shop had some!! lucky!!

then we discovered  1 front tyre was shafted and the other was naughty but ok ish!!  :'( (if you squint)  ;D

then we discovered 2 nails in OS Rear and a huge tear right to the thread in the middle of the NS Rear!!  :'( :'( :'( :'(

Luckily mark saved the day as he had a spare mig! with some legal wheels which we put on the back and then had to put my spare steely on the front!!

Needless to say the car looks a dog with all the odd wheels on at the moment!!  :'( :'(

So not a good day!!

Now hunting for some tyres, got a price online for some Toyo Proxes T1-R at £311. does anyone have any thoughts about what is the best tyre to go for! can't really afford the prices of Goodyear etc. but don't really want a buget tyre!! (got khumo's on now) I always thought the proxes were inbetween budget and premium!!

Will be also going to get a quote for a powerflow exhaust system!! Then needs timing kit doing very soon too!!!  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

God i'm going to be skint for a while!!

On mine I have Wanli's and after my infamous puncture change outside Blackpool recently I have had to replace one (I always keep the same make all round, only changing when I replace all 4)

The 225/55/16 W all in was £59.94 at Tyreweb a great chain of local tyre dealers. ;)

I don't know how much "budget" these tyres are, but they are wearing extremely well and are good at high speed. :y

"nankang" not a well known brand but they cheap, give quiet ride and long mileage.  ;) :)

I don't drive like a loon!! so why the tyres are so bad is due to the camber and tracking which I will be getting done very soon at Nigel Langs in Bolton I think! were reccomended by WIM.

I have heard of nankang and I think they are sort of in the same league as khumo's etc.

for a bit more I can have Toyo's which as far as I'm awar they are classed as a more premium tyre but may wear quicker.

Yeah I hope so mark!! gonna call round to my local tyre garage after work today and see if they can match the online prices and if not will order online. Didn't think £311 + £10 deliver was a bad price for toyo's do you?

Edit: Although that is with a 5% discount code that I found online!!  :y

After my previous post on the Wanli tyres fitted to my car, and stating I thought they were good, forget it!! :o :o :o

Cem has kindly warned me that there have been many reports of these tyres not being up to standard, or simply down right dangerous!! :o :o :o  This I have now backed up be doing some surfing on the web; far too many unfavouable reports on Wanli tyres for my liking and now I will be replacing the whole set and writing off the £60 just spent. ::) ::) ::) ::)

Mark is dead right about the importance of tyres being of good quality, and as I quite often do high speeds on motorways safety factors of tyres is vitally important! :y :y :y

Until the new tyres are fitted it is a maximum of 60 mph!! 8-)

..........and to think of the speeds I have already got them up to!!!!! :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

it briefly says if your tires are on the minimum legal depth brake

distances really differ :-?

I used it simply go for known brands, mainly Michelin but also Conti etc.

Nowadays I look for tyre reports and reviews on the internet, because even reputable manufacturers often get a model wrong...

I now have new Dunlop's (SP Sport Fastresponse, to be precise) bought from Blackcircles.co.uk (recommended, good service). Reviews on the net were good, tyres reasonably priced.... the Eagle NCT5 that came with car as OE were down to 4mm so were scrapped, and as they had bad reviews I did not bother trying to get them but went for the Dunlops.

I should add that this is not for the omega, which I no longer have...

True.

But not everyone can afford to buy top range new, sticky, superfantastic tyre.  Sometimes budget is all that is available to a persons wallet.

Not the first time that I have put part worns on a car 'cos I was absolutely skint with too many bills to pay at the same time.....

T1-Rs are quite soft, grippy tyres. Popular with kit cars and the like. They last well on a light car, but might be a bit soft for an Omega. Time will tell.

Oh, and I have worn tyres and a performance meter so might have a play with stopping distances "before and after", although thinking about it I've just put on new disks and pads and it's wet. ::)

There used to be also a choice between the more-expensive Radial tyres and the cheaper Cross-ply.... and 'steel-belted' was another expensive option... but I am talking about way back now...

Last time I used them was on my lovely 1960 A40, and I paid less than £20 for a full set at Woolwich from a company who specialized in them.   They were great, but there again I never got above 45 mph in that A40 :o :o ;D ;D ;D ;)

On the tyre side T1-Rs are very soft, had them on the CDX and they only lasted 16k, and the CDX doesn't get pushed hard, and the fronts wore down as quick as the rears!!!

Budget tyres are generally crap, but they are mostly made by the 'big' companies under a different name.

I know someone who is Pirelli UK customer service advisor and she did tell me the brand that they make but i cannot remember what it was  ::)

On the tyre thread... just fitted front nearside tyre. Had Michellin pilot but as i was pleased with the two Avon ZV3's fitted to rear went for same on front. Good value i thought for a branded tyre at £85 each from Tyre shopper, the internet shop for National Tyre chain. When i bought the two rears a few months ago the normal price in the tyre centre was £265 for the pair, but by buying them online, and getting them fitted free at my local National tyre centre, all i paid was £165 all in. Bargain i thought for a correctly rated branded tyres. :)
