Title: Query re DVLA personalised registrations
Post by: Markjay on 07 October 2008, 15:03:10
Just wondering if someone has more info about this...

I was thinking of getting a personalised registration for my daughter who is learning to drive, but has no car (yet...).

Can I buy it from the DVLA and keep it without a car, or do I have to have it registered to a specific car?

If the latter, do I have to use the personalised plate once registered, or can I register it to my car but keep using the original one that came with the vehicle?

Thank you in advance....  :)

You can apply to keep a plate "on retention". I believe there is a time limit and a yearly fee for doing this. If it's assigned to a vehicle it has to be on the vehicle, as the vehicle only has one identity at a time.

You can keep it on a retention certificate for 12 months, then re-new for another 12 months, then it HAS to go on a vehicle or you loose it

If you register it to your car then it becomes the new number  :)
