Title: Dead dell laptop
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 07 October 2008, 20:43:22
The screen has finally given way on my Dell C600 / 500 laptop. Full of funny coloured lines and is intermittent. Probably dropped it one time too many ;D

Anyone know a good supplier for another (screen?) ::)

If you bin the entire laptop, can I have the bottom half of case - my spare Tech2 lappy (which Mr DTM is using) has a faulty battery clip, resulting in the battery falling on your foot ;D

You wouldn't want this case then - my battery falls out regularly - and incidently - is why my big toe is black  ;D ;D

I've been given an IBM thinkpad that someone has set a BIOS  password that no-one knows ... It seems the only way to sort it is to read the EEPROM ... I've found out how....

http://sodoityourself.com/hacking-ibm-thinkpad-bios-password

but it's not worth the hassle to me .. if anyone wants it and wishes to try they are welcome.

It does have a "normal" serial port

If no-one wants it then it'll go in the skip ....

this probably is of no help but my mrs had an extended warranty on her dell, had mother board and a couple of bits changed including the screen in the end, but only for a couple of "bruises" not failure, the relevant bit being they sent out an engineer to fit the parts at our address and fairly sure they guy said you can only get the parts from dell, but then he would wouldnt he. Looked quite easy to change though, or he made it look easy at least. Hope helps, somehow...

which laptop is it?

It is, according to the rear label, an IBM Thinkpad type 2628 also says  Thinkpad A20m if that's any use ... I certainly won't take anything for it .. it was given to me to try and sort, when I found out how and told the owner the complexiity I was told not to bother, they've bought a replacement. I was tempted to "have a go" at fixing it, but don't actully see that I'd use the machine anyway. It might be usefull for someone who needs a "true" serial port for "Tech2" or "cheapie Tech2"

I don't know how good the battery is as I've only run it off the mains whilst trying a few code inputs .. pissing in the dark really as I don't even know how many digits to use !!

It is free to anyone who wants it .. :)

Silly question, was it 'accidentally damaged' in a manner which means you can go through your home insurance to get it fixed (or replaced)? If not I think I have a complete working spare but will need to check the model number which will not be until this evening. I also have a spare Inspiron 9300 with a 17" widescreen which I need to get rid of should anyone be interested...has just had a new battery installed.

OK, what I have is actually a C510/C610 so I presume it is the one after yours. Been trying to sell it with no joy and if it hangs around here it is going to end up broken so it is here if anyone wants to collect it....

If you really don't want it, I'd be happy to arrange and pay for a courier - I'm sure I could have a go at taking some parts out of it to fix my existing dell :y

I'm also hoping to take Entwood up on the offer of the one with the BIOS issue... if I could get both going - I'll offer one back up on here, free to a good home :y

It's here and fully working just waiting for someone to want it....free to good home as they say. For a small fee you could have the Inspiron 9300 with the 17" display too.....before the wife finds out just how many laptops I've got sat here in my little hidey hole
