Title: I've  finally set up my Omega Business
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 18 October 2008, 21:26:19
Well, after much deliberation, I have taken the plunge and formally setup a small business, to enable me to do my Omega Mobile Mechanics venture properly.

I am fully registered with HMRC, Inland revenue etc and hold full public liability insurance for the motor and mechanical trade.

I will only be doing this part time, so availability will be a little limited, but I plan to get as many bookings in as I can and be as flexible as possible.

Please check out my new website. Please bear in mind that is is only a first draft and is still being worked on. You may not see it yet while DNS propogates. The address is www.omegamechanic.co.uk

Please bear in mind that due to the costs of holding public liability insurance, business motor insurance and all of the other costs, my prices are not quite as low as they used to be - but I will always be more competetive than any dealer or garage.

Constructive feedback welcome on any areas - I'm not the most experienced with business issues, and I think I have things covered, but if there are any business guru's who would like to offer advice, please do :y

Thanks for reading  :y

Well done James, i'm not in business myself but one tip I learned from bosses i've worked for is to get the best accountant you can afford as a lot of the equipment , phone bills etc  you can  write  off to tax.

Although I must admit - Tech2 is very tempting, and would help business.

you might want to put charges for further distances (unless I missed that),
its one thing for a quick run to Swansea say :D but to Scotland would cost more.

James,

That's a nice looking clear and concise site.

Have you thought about covering other V6 and 2.0 Vauxhalls?

There's a wealth of C25XE's and X20XEV's fitted to various Vauxhall models and IMHO an Oil cooler on a V6 Calibra would be no more of a challenge than on an Omega.

Looks good James  :y.....i havent looked at all the pages yet.....got a bitch her that wants her walk and dinner  ;D

Only thing i noticed on the home page apart from Kevin's post, is that you got your gmail email addy advertised.

I would change that to James(or whatever you want it doesnt matter)@Omegamechanic.co.uk and have it forwarded to your gmail account.....its easier to control spam mail.
I actually allow all emails sent to my domains to get forwarded.....no matter whats in front of the @ ......and boy do i get loads of spam....

But you can control what gets forwarded.......ie you could have james@omegamechanic.co.uk.......and only allow mail sent to that to be forwarded.......if you start getting to much spam.....its easy to change to somethingelse@omegamechanic.co.uk  :y

Just my 2p worth  :)

Top man...if the experience I had when meeting you was anything to go by there should be a lot of repeat customers. Been doing the small company bit (one man band more like) for a few years now and it may be hard work but at least you can work your own way. Admittedly, IT is a much 'cleaner hands' type than car mechanic but each to their strengths and you know what my mechanic skills are like...
Must get a quote for a thrust washer and an LPG 'sort out'....

Did you mean: Vauxhall sealant.

Exhaust replacement

If an exhaust corrodes and becomes rotton,

Did you mean: rotten

For those jobs I don't need a huge tool selection, therefore could probably travel by train which would reduce the travelling costs.

Using genuine new GM parts for the camcovers, and a contitech cambelt kit, the cost - to include travel expenses, for a cambelt kit change, fitting of both banks camcover gaskets, and full breather cleanout would be £376.

Probably not the most competitive quote but unfortunately the travel costs are higher than usual due to the distance.

Still probably a good cut under dealership prices, though :y

Congratulations. I wish you the very best in your venture. In fact, like many OOFers I will be no doubt callng on your services.

Your site is well put together and looks professional. It's easy on the eye and navigation is a breeze.

Your pricing is very keen. (I hope you are able to maintain such low prices for us members in the future  [smiley=wink.gif]).

Good luck.  :y

Thanks mate. The prices are much more than they used to be. Unfortunately though, they are as low as I can justify, if I'm going to make any kind of partial living off it.

I don't envisage they will go up anytime soon - the cost of petrol coming down has assisted in that :y

Some suggestions for your Google ranking - when you get around to thinking about it.

Make sure your index.htm(l) is populated with keywords. Omega Mechanic for example.

Your site is referenced from OOF. Return the compliment - reference OOF on your site.

Work through Google Webmaster Tools Clicky (https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=sitemaps&passive=true&nui=1&continue=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fwebmasters%2Ftools%2Fdashboard&followup=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fwebmasters%2Ftools%2Fdashboard&hl=en)

Reference any other site that has direct relevence to yours.

Search the web for Google's ranking methods.

It got my site from #13 to #1 for the search term 'Bandit127' ......

Nice one James, Us miggy owners need a mechanic who doesn't have a panic attack when you tell em its an omega.
I Was going to pm you recently to see if you could do my cam belt but saw you had injured your ribs.
So have been looking for Cam locking kit on e-gay to have a go myself. Very relieved to see you have decided to do it for a living.
Have looked at the website and like the prices. Know from the all the comments on the forum that you are held in high esteem by the members.

Fan-rather'-Tastic!

You'll do great. The site is very professional. Someone suggested branching out into other Vx marques with shared engines; do it!

Get in touch, as soon as I find one, I need my Diff swapping for an LSD and my gearbox draining and ATF replacing.

TestImonial has been sent to PM.

If anyone else out there has had experience of James' outstanding work do the right thing and send him, or post, a well deserved testimonial. :y

Ps If you fancy sending me a price for fitting an lpg kit with donut tank in wheel well to my 3.2 saloon please feel free. 5mins from Jcn 11 of the m4.  :y

Lol.... you wouldn't be the first customer I have flown to.....
With airline tickets from £20 each way when booked that far in advance, European cambelt changes are actually very feasable :y

(and is a great excuse for me to enjoy a little sunshine :D )

Thursday 22nd January 2009? :) ;)

The day is booked out for you, LZ. :y

If it's just a cambelt on a 2.5 then I only need limited tools so I'll come down on the train, it will make it cheaper for you.

How likely is this day to change? If you're certain you can make it I'll look at advance rail fares, I might even be able to get a return ticket for a tenner, this far in advance ;D

It is extremely unlikely to change (with the exception of a serious accident or my death!! ;D ;D ;)).

I will have available by then all the tools necessary as I currently have full sets of 3/8" and 1/2" drive metric and imperial sockets, "Torx" sockets and drives, full set of metric and imperial ring spanners, ratchet metric ring spanners, multitude of screwdrivers, pliers, stetsons and misc tools, 2 ton trolley jack, axle stands and ramps.  By the time I see you I intend also to have the cam locking kit. :y :y

I will buy the full cam belt kit and water pump at trade. 8-) 8-)

Anything else you need, apart from me helping?!! :D :D ;)

You're more than welcome to get the kit at trade, although, I can sometimes get them a little cheaper than that. ::)

Where's your closest rail station?

Oh yes James, goes without saying, plenty of that!! ;D ;D ;)

We will compare prices then nearer the time on who can get what parts the cheapest (but genuine Vx of course)!  All for that! :y :y :y :y

Ashford International is the station about 1 mile away from me, from which I would collect you from of course! :D :D ;)

Assuming it's Ashford, I can travel at £23.40 each way (on the day)  - no advance tickets are showing at the mo, although they might be populated later on....

With respect to cambelt kit - Gates, Contitech, or SKF kits are all pretty much the same - it's one area where you actually don't benefit from a genuine item :y

Yes, Ashford Kent! :y

Ok James, I will go along with your advice on this one :y :y as I know very little about all the different types, so all I have ever done with any car I have used / owned is default to the original manufacturers parts list. ;)

Don't do brakes or suspension work, is that to do with insurance cover or you just don't want that type of work.
The reason I ask is I will be wanting that kind of work doing soon and would defo want a quote if you do it for forum members, any chance?

Also do you do any work on the TD, say a themostat change.

Good luck with the business, never had the pleasure of meeting you but you are held in high regard I read.

Hi Rob,

I am regularly in Cardiff... where in wales are you, and what jobs are you looking for?

The V6 is more my area than the TD, but depending on what you need I'm sure I can help... :y

Hi Mick

Stat change no problem.

I AM fully insured for any motor mechanical work, incl brakes and suspension - however I generally don't do this kind of work because a) I'm not as experienced in this area as I am with engines and B) it's more hassle than it's actually worth - compared to things like cambelt changes (which by comparison, very little can go wrong)...

Let me know your requirements though, I'm sure we can come to an arrangement.

good starter web site  :y
You may find that having a "contact form" is better than letting everyone know your email address (it gets hidden in the form) that way ppl cant spam it. I can send you the files /code if you wish.

I've had a lot of messages from northern members wanting work done, and to do them individually makes it harder with travel costs.....

... I'm therefore considering taking a week out and having a bit of a northern "tour" if there's enough interest, might need a bit of co-ordinating, though!!

We discussed my own conversion, however (as things stand) I don't intend to go through Telio to obtain my kits.. - that may or may not change...
