Now JC's in the sh1t for a gag he cracked while driving a lorry on Sunday's episode of TG. I won't mention exactly what it was as there might be some of you that haven't watched it yet. ::)
Taken in the correct perspective I personally didn't find it offensive but OFCOM received 200 complaints. :o
Opinions?........
-
agreed, i didnt personally find it offensive but i can see how others would!
-
I believe the yorkshire ripper is sueing for defamation of character.
-
....especially if it has been one of your daughters/sisters/wife etc.! >:(
Tasteless and 'edgy' humour (?)....whilst funny to many, can also be deeply-deeply offensive.....perhaps that kind of J.C flippant comment might be better left for his Christmas DVD; rather than via our National public service broadcaster. :'(
-
People have forgotten how to laugh & find everthing offensive.
Hell, say what you like within reason, you can't please everyone, because no one likes it
-
I think he was sailing a little close to the wind given that people's sensitivity to "overpaid celebrities" being offensive on BBC TV has been inflated by the media over the last week or so.
I'm sure it was deliberate too. ::)

Think Clarkson sails close to the wind anyway probably if there hadn't been all this trouble with Ross nothing would have been said....
Think he deserves a slap on the hand Clarkson

I think the main difference between the Ross/Brand saga and JC is that their jibe was aimed at a specific innocent individual (something I didn't agree with) whereas JC's was not. As you said Daz, not worth more than a slap on the wrist.
-
If JC gets sacked my direct debit stops!

;D ;D ;D
You never disappoint Steve!!
-
I remember thinking the comments were lacking in taste (IMHO) but as Bob points out were not personal in the way the RossBrandgate comments were. Remember also that it was almost certainly shot before the hooha of the last couple of weeks, and the BBC/Top Gear editorial team could easily have cut it prior to broadcast so they are at least as culpable.
-
whats the UK viewing figures for Top Gear any one have any idea ???
-
I admit I winced when I heard that jibe. It was unecessary as he has a great sense of humour without such "edginess".

Neither Omegatoy nor AmigoMV6 were offended by the comments ...... ;) ;)

I think around 9 million! Its the most popular program on BBC2.
FFS which people could just learn to take a joke, sad gits complaining with nothing better to do?
We have some truckers here, and a belive one of them was crying his eyes out in laugher!
Anyone who takes TG or JC seriously is a bloody idiot.
-
The problem with this "edgy" humour is where to draw the line.
Suppose he had been doing a bit about school caretakers and said "all they do is sweep the playground, kill a schoolgirl, sweep the playground etc." (Huntley). What would have been the reaction?
If that is not funny (which it isn't) then why should it be funny to talk about lorry drivers and prostitute murder?
The more I think about it, the more I think it was an ill-judged remark. I like Clarkson, but he needs to be a little bit more circumspect.
-

You're probably right, but as said before the programme is likely to have been recorded months before the Woss/Brand affair.
-
I wasn't offended i was to busy laughing me socks off at there antics in the trucks ,i've not laughed so since when they were in the caravan http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=E9epdvykQl4 :) :) Dont know if any off you were listening to Talksport when the union guy was on ,he made himself look a right buffon when asked how many of his members complained, asked how many of 17000 members had complained was first asked if it was a 1000 or more ,no answer, 100+ no answer ,10 or less he said im not sure on the figures as all the emails dont come to our office ::) ::) like some one said if the ross /brand thing hadnt happened no one would have really paid much attention to it ;) ;) ;)
-
Apparently lorry drivers that were asked were not the least bit offended.
But more to the point this is annother case of BBC editing and monitoring. If anything the fault lies with the BBC production team for allowing it to be airerd.

The unfortunate thing is it's not going to offend lorry drivers but it is going to be deeply offensive to someone, somewhere who happens to have had a loved one murdered by a lorry driver.
This appears to be the attraction of this type of humour - that it has the potential to cause serious offence, but it doesn't happen to offend those who find it funny - so that's allright.
I can see why Ross has to resort to such antics. Without taking such risks, he's a tedious chat show host whose face just appears to fit on the telly but with talent that's equally skin deep IMHO.
I agree that Clarkson, doesn't need to stoop low like this. He has a very clever wit about him, and it comes over much better in his writing than on TG, again IMHO.

Absolutely. It would no doubt have been recorded before the previous scandal reached frenzy level so it was out of Clarkson's hands by then.

Hell, say what you like within reason, you can't please everyone, because no one likes it
Agreed...not offensive in my view....not aimed at a individual person.
We need to be careful with this Ross/Brand / Clarkson saga that we do not go back to TV like it was in the fifties.
In my opinion it is because Clarkson is so un PC that Top Gear is so entertaining.....and long may it continue that way. :y :y :y

Absolutely spot on! :y
There are always going to be things that offend some people and not others and the difficulty is always going to be where to draw the line.
Can you imagine if Mary Whitehouse was still around with todays TV programmes and films!! ::) ;D
-
Agreed...not offensive in my view....not aimed at a individual person.
you mean not offensive to you, or in general..?
If you had had a sister/daughter etc who had been murdered by a lorry driver, do you think you would have a different opinion? Could you laugh it off on the basis it wasn't offensive to most other people?
Persoanlly I feel bad that there are a few people in that situation who would obviously be deeply upset by that humour. That is why I think it was in bad taste. Its not the same thing at all as ribbing caravan owners and the like.

I can only speak for myself...the same as anybody.
Whatever somebody makes a joke of ......someone else will be offended....too make sure that nobody was offended ......ever.....we would have to completely ban jokes and humour.
Really ..it is a case of you can't please all the people all of the time. :y :y :y but most people enjoy a good laugh most of the time. ;D

I love top gear and the more un pc the better, but I do think this was a bit needless, not one of JC,S finer moments.

No, not offended here.
Until I read about your abuse in The Daily Mail tomorrow morning. Then - you can be sure - I will be complaining to the Moderators in the strongest possible terms.

This is nothing to do with Clarkson. He is paid to ramble in front of a camera and offer his opinion. I'm absolutely sure he has said may worse things, I know that I have.
The bottom line is that the problem, and responsibility, lies with the editors and the programme makers who are then presented with shed loads of material on video, some of which they decide to use to make a good programme and some of which they decide to leave out for various reasons such as it's boring, irrelevant, un-PC not funny etc.
IMHO I just think that the tiny part of dialogue in question was unnecessary, didn't add much (there were much funnier bits) and was completely irrelevant to any value in the overall peice of VT.
It is not a live programme, and the BBC probably wouldn't let JC go live given what he can be like.
As for Ross and Brand, I decided not to add to that debate on here because I don't think Brand is, or ever has been, worth me tapping a keyboard, but at 48 and paid what he is as a professional and key broadcaster Wossy simply should have known better. They are very, very different issues; it wasn't so much that it was un-PC, it was just plain stupid and disrepectful to Andrew Sachs as an indiviudal and fellow professional entertainer.
Both could have been better monitored and edited though. Down to the programme makers. Perhaps if they paid the likes of Wossy a bit less they could spend a bit more on the makers and the processes of making the programmes.
Rant over :y

well said albatross :y

Well I was asked to attend Durham Police Station and was questioned in connection with the Yorkshire Ripper enquires, following the 'Tape' incident. I did not find the comment offensive, but then I did not see it, read about it in the 'Sun' today whilst in Court. :D :D :D
May I point out that the comment made was reckles, not un PC, which I think is different.
I do not read the Sun, it just happened to be lying around, and I was not in the dock..................... :-X
-
Agree with tunnie, JC has a go a most groups in his unique way. Its the PC brigade off on one again
-
i'm a lorry driver and was not 1 bit offended :)
i found it funny ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
nobody is allowed to say anything today incase it upsets someone, so i'll say no more on the subject without thinking up a pre-warning annoncement in case someone thinks they can sue me for saying it. :D

I'm afraid I found the comments, although slightly amusing, in very poor taste. This was broadcast so very close to the anniversary of the "Ipswich Ripper" incident which was originmally attributed to a lorry driver. My heart goes out to the family of the
5 girls at such a hard time of the year for them! Living in the Ipswich area and particularly knowing that I probably drove past at least 2 of the bodies I just del that the "joke" was in very poor taste.
That said, the show is great and a gentle slap on the wrist is plenty! Although the special segments are recorded, it says to remember that the studio segments and gags are recorded on the Wednesday preceding the broadcast so a lot of the gags were deliberately provocative... And funny!
-
I sympathise with the families of the Swindon girls, there's nothing funny about that. Yes i drive an artic & no i was'nt offended in the slightest. It may have been in bad taste granted but comedy often is nowadays, it's a progression of sorts. Look back to the 70's, Love thy neighbour, Till death us do part, etc. More recently Life on Mars, all cliche's of comedy that was PC then but not now. So we've banned old humour, are we going to ban todays before it get's the chance to grow old? If we carry on like this we won't have anything to amuse us. Be careful what you wish for.
The only thing that upset me was that they did'nt have to reverse around a load of parked cars, that would've been a scream!!! ::)

I don't think we've banned old humour, but we are witnessing a dumbing down of humour. You cannot beat the humour in Only Fools and Horses, but it was written by the very talented John Sullivan. He knew, as other writers before him (like Ronnie Barker) that the best humour was subtle. Often, it was as much about what was NOT said as what was spoken. Additionally, the "play on words", (e.g. the Four Candles sketch) was an art form. These days, you only need to raise a laugh by mentioning sexual antics, or by using four-letter words. The laughter comes from shock. That is not real humour, in my book. It is playing on knee-jerk reactions - laughter is a common response to shock.
That said, I must admit that the old Julian and Sandy sketches on Round the Horne (On climbing a ladder: "Oh I feel like a fireman, Julian". Don't be silly, Sandy, where can we get a fireman this time of night?") were based on the shock of homosexual innuendo, at a time when homosexuality was illegal in the UK.
Nevertheless, shock humour can only go so far. Stand-up comics these days cover everything from masturbation to necrophilia, and even the most "shocking" c*** word is used. There is a limit, though. That is when there is no human behaviour left that has not been covered, no matter how depraved. It is when the c*** word enters Hansard. The shock will no longer exist. Thereafter, no humour?
Discuss (as they used to say in my A level papers!!).
-
The whole world has gone mad with this PC crap.
Most humour is likely to offend SOMEBODY, but the vast majority of people would have chuckled at JCs comments, including me, and I am a truck driver.
Clarkson REGULARLY refers to motorcyclists as HOMO-torcyclists but that goes un-noticed.......
Why the fuss??
People have nothing more important to do than moan about petty little things like this....
Its ridiculous.

Hi Nick. Our opinions often differ. I don't find swearing in itself funny, hence i don't find Chubby Brown funny but he does'nt offend me, i just don't watch him. To generalize the English have a "certain" sense of humour in that we can laugh about topics we find outrageous, death, natural disasters, sickness, insanity, dementia, incest, child abuse, car crashes, fires, birth, abortion, miscarriage, war, racism, sexism, gay people of either gender, folk from any area of the uk, religion, the list is endless but the jokes can be amusing even if the topic is close to heart & actually matters to us we're able to laugh in the face of adversity, does'nt mean we do'nt care it's just the English way...."Always look on the bright side of life"?
Discuss, whistle noting key changes & show your working. You may turn your papers over now. :y

Please don't misinterpret my previous post... I just think the comments were poorly timed and in bad taste. I'm not at all insulted or offended by them but...
That said, humour is a funny thing ('scuse the pun) and unfortunately not everyone is the same. But having said that, if we all had the same opinions, sense of humour etc the world would be a very boring place!

No Dean, you're a Lorryist :y
All this is, is the press blowing a story up to sell papers (good news doesn't sell, bad news does)
All the truck drivers on here will know that if anyone offends more than anyone, it's the wheel tappers (VOSA). They create more sh!t.
My Lorryist mate hates them with a vengeance & would drive miles out of his way (at his cost) just to avoid them.

Very true! One thing I never understand is why these complainers watch certain TV programmes they find offensive in the first place. :-/ I'm sure they do it just so they can complain. OK, I know some people might not be aware of the content of certain TV programmes but shows like TG are renowned for being un-PC and a bit close to the mark. They can always change channel or switch off. ::)

Unfortunately, it's not a black-and-white situation. You can't say we should have a laissez-faire attitude towards anything as long as it is deemed by some to be "funny". I'm as anti-PC as the next person and I couldn't abide a situation in which such comments as I have highlighted were banned. After all, ribbing sections of the community is fine...and, indeed, the very basis of observational humour.
Here. though, JC's comment was alluding to the gruesome murder of young women. It was inappropriate and not very funny. JC is capable of much better, IMHO!
-
Agreed. :y

Personally I am glad that Ross/Brand/Clarkson are getting a bit of stick over this kind of thing.
If I want edgy humour I can seek it out, I am not a prude, I find Chubby Brown, Kevin Bloody Wilson etc very funny.
I cannot stand Moyles or Clarkson - Hammond for one simple reason, it is what people in any other time or place would call bullying.
It would be fine if it were only on infequently but it seems to have become the standard format for humour.
If you saw your kid getting ripped the way Moyles or Clarkson rip into folks you would be livid, but as long as you laugh with them it is humour.
Sorry to sound so impassioned but that is my opinion. If you want humour on the BBC watch QI.
The Beeb can still hold it's head high, Radio has some excellent shows, BBC4 is superb for factual stuff and BBC3 shows '2 pints of larger' AND 'family guy'!
