Title: Refinishing a wooden table

We have a wooden table and the top is marked and scored (mainly a little idiot scratching a pen into it).

What do I resurface the table top with once I have sanded it down?

What timber is it Martin ?
It can be waxed or (Danish ) oiled .

it depends on what finish it had, is it varnished or stained, if stained you can just get coloured wax & give it a few coats.

Pine I think, and it is a hard smooth coating

we bought a pine table that was bare wood, i just got the solid wax [coloured] & gave it a few coats of that, they also do it in neutral colour if you want to keep the lighter colour, the wax is better than stain due to stain being like p1ss it soaks in too quickly & makes it harder to get a uniform colour :y

So what would it have been covered in most likely?

im no expert either martin ;) but it could have been covered in either varnish [laquer] or just stained, if it wasnt shiney then id say its probably just waxed, as i say those waxes come in various shades so just pick the one nearest to what you want, bearing in mind the more coats you give it the darker itll go, also itll stop people writing on it so easily :y

We always used to apply 3 coats of thin varnish and then when dry work wax in with fine wire wool.

go for a bartop laquer, very hard wearing and will last longer. ive seen them doing it when ive refurbished pubs, not too sure how it works to be honest but is a brilliant finish  :y

if you want a really hard wearing laquer you will never beat bowling lane laquer, designed to take continuous impact from 16lb bowling balls :y :y :y
