A mate of mine drives one of these little contraptions. 03 reg. owned it from new, last serviced when 1 year old :o
So today I changed the treacle for some fresh oil,new oil and air filters.I asked when the cambelt was changed, reply was "whats a cambelt?" - it hasnt ever been changed (103,000 miles). So I have volunteered to do the job ,as long as their isnt anything too specialised
i.e. special tools etc: just wondered if anyone knows anything about them ? :o

weeell...
it'll probably be quite horrible to do, might involve jacking up the engine from the engine mount after you've undone it to get the belt off as it'll be on the drivers side of the engine most likely with it being front wheel drive
-
if its an eight valve it will be quite simple yes you do have you jack the engine off its mount but its very simple , however i would change the tensioner and the water pump as a matter of course. and its a safe engine risk of valve damage as a result of belt break is minimal.

this link will show photo access is easy no tools needed but DO NOT remove crank shaft centre bolt only remove the 3 m8 bolts which hold the pulley onto the sprocket.

I have always detested the things, but credit where its due,it has gone over 5 years / approx. 90,000 miles without having an air filter/oil filter/oil/or cambelt change and when I asked about anti freeze he said it definetely had some in when it was new.how the thing still runs at all beggars belief.
-
Whatever you do, get the antifreeze flushed, dropped and replaced - those engines are notorious for throwing head gaskets partly due to blocked waterways causing the engine to overheat.
Headgaskets apart, those are great cars for the £££
Cheers,
James

Thanks for the advice,I will pass it on. I spoke to him last night and offered to change the cambelt/waterpump,but he thinks I am a bit of a worryguts and isnt sure if he will bother.
If he doesnt,I will keep £50 aside to affer him when the engine lets go.

Proper recipe for welsh rarebit? :P
Ingredients
25g/1oz butter
25g/1oz flour
150ml/5fl oz milk
175g/6oz cheddar cheese, grated
150ml/5fl oz brown ale
1 tsp English mustard
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
salt and pepper
2 egg yolks
4 slices of toast
Method
1. Make a roux with the butter and flour, and leave to cool.
2. Bring the milk to the boil, then whisk it into the roux. Bring to the boil once again, whisking to ensure that it does not burn and also that the sauce is free of lumps.
3. Add the cheese, beat in and remove from the heat.
4. Reduce the ale, English mustard and Worcestershire sauce. When thick, add this mixture to the cheese sauce. Season well with salt and pepper and beat in the egg yolks.
5. Spoon on to the slices of toast and grill until bubbling. Serve with extra Worcestershire sauce handed separately.
