Just did a few sums, as I am sat at home feeling yucky and sorry for myself:
3.0 V6 running cost:
At 28mpg, with petrol at 91.9p, cost is 14.93p per mile
500 miles will cost you 74.65
3.0 V6 on LPG running cost:
At 22mpg, With LPG at 52.9p, cost is 10.95p per mile
500 miles will cost you 54.75
2.2 DTi running cost:
At 42mpg, with diesel at 106.9p, cost is 11.58p per mile
500 miles will cost you 57.90
-
2.5 V6 running cost:
At 38mpg, with petrol at 91.9p, cost is 11.97p per mile
500 miles will cost you 59.85

I'll be quite honest & say that if i was buying another Mig, i would go for 3.2V6 with LPG & bite the bullet over the VED. For how many miles i drive (which come the end of dec will be around 5000). I'd still have the good return & have warp speed to boot :D

I've only ever had 38mpg out of a V6 on a long run, but I agree it is do-able..

You must drive slower than Mother tunnie!
If you aint got the mpg with a the 2 in the front, your not driving it right!

What sort of speed to achieve 38 mpg.
Best I managed was 24 mpg in my GLS but no computer to help keep an eye on consumption. :-/

He is doing a lot of significant motorway runs to work and back at the moment...

That is taking it easy

for me 38 mpg in city traffic is only possible with a 4 pot clit,
sometimes even worse as I do short runs and hammer it..
with miggy the best average was 26-27 mpg in city..
but of course on highway travels I catch those figures..
-
I think the petrol to LPG gap is a little bigger than that. 22MPG on gas is commuting territory, which won't give you 28 on petrol, IME. Also, whilst I can get gas at 51.9 here, it can be had from motorway services for 52.9 and the cheapest petrol here is 93.9.
My fuel costs are now lower than for my 1.8 8v manual petrol mk1 Laguna back in 2006. I have an extra 2 cylinders, an extra 117 BHP, RWD and an auto gearbox. 8-)

A saving of £20 per 500 miles. So, if a conversion at a garage costs £1500, you can make it back in 37500 miles. :-?

I don't disbelieve you but don't know how. I drove back from Guy's last weekend & saw 32.odd, and that's cos I reset it on the motorway. The weather was lousy & so was only doing around 65/70 till I got to the M62. As soon as I started driving at 75/80 the mpg went down towards 30. It's rapidly on the downhill now (27.something) that it's used around town ... occasionally.
You've either a magic wand or a very very light right foot. ;) :y

I find the higher insurance for a 3L the annoying part. >:(

What's insurance like in America? I ask because, my daughter was at Lancaster uni with some US students last year, who couldn't get their head around the huge cost of car insurance over here, like wise, my daughter couldn't get her head around the fact that a lot of these young Americans were driving car of 4, 5 6 litres/liters at a very young age at home.
-
My cousin went to Canada when she was 16. She learnt to drive in a 6.6
litre liter trans am, and the nearst post box was 15 miles away. What a life. So every day they did a minmum 30 mile run just getting used to the car. :y :y Fuel and insurance where peanuts. :-/

It varies quite a bit from state to state if you are under 25. I used to pay in dollars what the Omega is in pounds. However, you pay month to month. None of this buy a year up front and then they can cancel it BS. >:(
-
the running cost must also be weighed up on aspects of servicing costs and life expectancy of the vehicle. i know my tractor is not a good exaqmple as it is poorlysick at the moment but a diesel will outlast a petrol and when serviced needs less attention
-
./....

I always loved those cars ......the huge great eagle on the bonnet hood. I liked the tail lights all across the back. And those unconerted from the US had 'turn signals' that were half across the car.

I have done that, in our old manual 2.0L estate. Some years ago when the fuel blockades were on I drove it sensibly in town and never above 50mph on m 12 mile commute, got near 40mpg, was boring as hell though...... ;D ;D ;D
-
lol highest i ever saw in the 2.0 was 33 on the way back from london after my holiday down to newquay and that was takin it steady!
-
You all wanna buy a merc Viano 2.2 ..... ;D
Tho it hasnt got a fuel comp in it....so i carnt state exact figures........
All i know is its costing me less in diesel or about the same as my omega did on LPG .....
OK floor it and it drinks diesel but treat it gently.....and it sips it ;)
150bhp i think it is.....coz its auto...
The comp is a bit cleverer than the omega..... its been telling me for last few days i got a bulb blown.....its saying a number plate bulb is blown....which is correct! lol!!

I zeroed the computer when i left Lakes 07 in my 2.5 manual (Kates baby now) & @ 80/90 plus the odd squirt here & there but taking it easy showed 35.2 when i got home.
Let's not forget that most of these MFD's are a gimmick & not to be taken as gospel with mpg range etc. Best thing about them is if all your pixels are still working!!! ::)

And a manual box! I'd rather have the fuel bill than bugger about with the other 2 limbs. 1 hand and one foot, all you need.

Auto probably doesn't make much difference on a motorway cruise (IIRC, they're slightly higher geared so may even help economy). They will drink considerably more at sub-50 MPH, of course, which seems to be most of the time these days thanks to the dawdlers on the roads. >:(

Mine drops into top gear at about 48mph - so everyone in front of me always does 46 >:(

Careful driving.
I have achieved 38mpg every week since August.....on my 500 mile a week commute!
And after 500 miles I still have no fuel light on!

I'm back on the forum and 2 weeks into my new job, and I'm loving it. I have driven and delivered many almost new cars, Jags, Volvo V50 and V70, Discovery 3, Range Rover, Vectra, Astra, S-Max, Passat, Mondeo, Daewoo Matiz, Merc A, C, and E class, Focus etc. Best of them all ? No comparison - Volvo V70 2.4 Diesel Auto, fantastic car, and on a 300 mile round trip, 41.7 MPG. Worst car on fuel - Astra 1.6 Elite, only did 100 miles but only showed 31MPG, and yes I did reset the trip computer.
