Title: How about a skills base thread?
Post by: The Barge Captain on 25 November 2008, 00:24:48
Inspired by advice from JayW on finance, how about an ongoing thread where members post what their skill bases are, and if you think someone has a skill that might help your individual need then PM them

E.g I served my time as a maintenance spark, then worked on photo processing machines, pallet wrappers, production line assemblies and test rigs, and fire alarms.

Oh, and i'm also quite quick at changing nappies. ;D

Hmmmm ok:

-I'm a dab hand at installing networks and troubleshooting PCs.
-Can still program in the following languages (although I may be a bit rusty to start with) asp, java, javascript, c, c++, VB+A, sql, php.
-I am competant with epoxy and fibreglass and I am still learning about woodwork
-I know a bit about sailing yachts and dinghies
-I know a fair bit about mountaineering, fell walking and outdoor safety
-Mechanical skills are sound but now the omega is going expect this to dwindle somewhat.
-Fluent in French (nearly native level) if you need anything translating

-The fun stuff:
-I can get a 1" grouping at 200m with ironsight (G3 not the poxy SA80)
-I am a bit of a dab hand with firearms in general, including their security and maintenance
-I can get a 432 sideways and airbourne (and then fix it afterwards  ;D ;D)

Very competent at various XBASE family languages. Very good at designing databases for quick access and small footprint, mainly XBASE format, using Advantage Database Server. Was good at Netware but let it all slip and since we don't do hardware anymore apart from reinstalling Windows not so hot on operating systems. Khow and use a bit of C and C++, managed to hide from VB as it is horrid ;D

Pretty good at video filming and editing, good at setting up home electronics, competent solderer, good at repairing things

Got an MCSE but it's very old, so nearly worthless.

Experienced in IT contract management and legal documentation, TUPE transfer, BSF contract negotiation. (all nearly useless here, I'll admit, but it pays the mortgage!)

Strong written english skills, as I write tender submissions all day, can help with CVs etc if needed.

Strong at presentations - not necessarily writing them, but delivering them is a strong point (and will get better soon as I'm being sent on a presentation skills course too!)

I can surf the internet like a pro.  ;D

 :D :D

Funnily enough the tracking is fine when I'm 'zooming' around the numerous roundabouts in stevenage - it's when I'm driving up the A1 and the car suddenly decides to dive to the left because the camber has changed by 1/2 a degree that worries me.

The roaring meg estate is a pain in the a**e, whoever designed the parking layout there needs a bullet in the back of the head. It always gets clogged up on the main entrance opposite the new B&Q 'cos the routing around the car park requires a sharp left and most drivers can't do it without ending up in the middle of the lane that brings people in!

If I remember right, the bowling alley is in the middle of the leisure park... I don't venture there too much after dark 'cos of all the drunken young 'uns thinking I'm a cab and yanking my doors open.

Anyway - I shall add you to my mental list of people to ask once my autobox gives up the ghost!  :y

I'm looking forward to seeing what my tracking is like after the WIM visit on saturday!

I find bugs in software and put others in myself.

I found a show stopper in a well know database driver a few years ago and I am currently hunting a bug in some purchased libraries for data browsers, exiting without closing some objects - eventually trashing the garbage collector

Don't seem to have any skills at the moment.  Out of work now for 4 months, soon be out of money, then out of home.

OK - I've been building large computer systems for large companies for 40 years.  But through a combination of circumstances, all the skills I had are now out of date - even if anyone needed a Fortran programmer, it's so long since I've done that, I probably couldn't remember anything about it.  Likewise C, Pascal and VAX/VMS.

I've just finished almost 5 years of logical design work on a major database using old versions of Oracle, and a not very popular CASE tool.  The design was so good that they didn't need to change it any more, so they made me redundant.  So I'm absolutely brilliant at transactional database design but I know sod all about Data Warehouses.  Guess what the market needs at the moment!

- Smattering of Java/J2EE
- Reasonable but not comprehensive PL/SQL
- Minimal DBA skills - building, tuning, sizing but not production
- Team leading, project management but no Prince 2
- Estimating, problem solving, application design
- Report writing, product evaluation

I really hope the national lottery comes up!

Bitter? Twisted? Depressed?  :( Of course I am!  :( :( :(

Transactional database design is a very important subject..

Nowadays most programmers even dont hear about it.

And so do the data warehousing.. But in last years everybody spend

their money for ready solutions..

But still I think you have the chance to get a decent job..Correct

time, correct place..dont give up.. :y
