In the early sixties ....the car magazines used to speed test their cars on certain stretches of the newly opened motorways (legally).

Can you imagine what the PC bunch would make of that today.

Most cars ran on drum brakes in those days as well. :y :y :y :y

You didn't need brakes in them days, there was nothing else on the roads ;D

I think that the 70mph speed limit was first enforced in 1964. :-/ :-/ :-/

Apparently some guys had been speed testing a Le Mans Cobra.....at crazy speeds......not sure but I think 185MPH was mentioned. :y

Front page headlines in the newspapers of the time.....led to public uproar.....led to the draconian 70MPH speed limit we have to this day. :-/ :-/ :-/

You have to laugh, 70mph speed limit when there were cross ply tyres, drum brakes, no seat belts, no ABS, no barriers and its still 70mph today, mind you, the driving skills have gone down hill  ::)

Yep....in 1964 ...the average family saloon was something like a......Ford Anglia......Austin1100......Cortina MK1.........Mini......Austin Cambridge............Although we also had the iconic E-Type ......that must have been a laugh until the fun police put a stop to it all. :y :y :y :y

I seem to remember reqading that a certain car manufacturer (possibly Aston Martin) was using the M1 as a test track.  Could be wrong - I was quite young then - might have misunderstood.  Actually, since I'm quite old now, I might have misremembered.

Just ignore me...

You are right....a lot of car makers used the M1 as a testing facility in the early days. :y :y :y
