Well am back in a vauxhall, am slowly gonna build back up to a miggy next year but for now i have an astra its a 1996 1.6 8v with fsh, a multilock, 123k and body work is MINT!!
Thats not why you may be shocked though ........This is ::) :o
It was running very cold so i bought a thermostat and some antifreeze only to find that i had to remove the cambelt to get at the housing :-X :'(
Not being very good mechanically this was a daunting prospect ....... so in true me style i removed the airbox and the front cover from offending cambelt, then got a pair of tin snips and hacked the top half of the rear cambelt cover off and voila!!!! easy access to the stat for me and anyone else that needs it after me :o ::) :P
So shocked/impressed or indifferent ??????????

I know of a certain local dealer that did that exact same thing to save time and hassle, still charged the guy for the whole "proper" job tho.

Woo hoo at last i have found my niche, gonna advertise in local paper astra thermostats done for 1/2 price of main dealer ::) ::)

Shocked & impressed. If you're not bothered about the car then what you did was a good idea :y
I've been known to remove parts on crap i've driven in the past to get at something & not put them back afterwards ;D My Migs a different story, all has to be done proper :y :y

Yup i agree i only paid £200 with 2 months tax and 6 months test so its a cheap but tidy runabout i can hopefully get a bit more from after christmas, once i get back on my feet i am gonna get myself a long term omega and yup every thing will have to be PERFECT!

I did get rid of all the debris i made sure of that and i was scared to slip the belt off encase anything moved as if someone mentions the words "careful or gentle " i run a mile as am a bit ham fisted ;D

Dont forget that Superglue needs to bond the cambelt rubber for at least 2 mins before you stick it back on !

I am not allowed to use superglue - or tippex either :'( as i said i am a bit clumsy lol

Luckily the 8V engine is normally safe... Although booked as an interference engine I have yet to find any damage from a broken belt :y :y

Ah well on the plus side it is now easier to inspect the belt ::) ::)

if a jobs worth doing then do it properly not bodgerly.

[size=16]WOOHOO It was all worth it it worked i have heat and car sits at 92 degrees even on the private track where i got 90 out of it ;D 8-) ::)[/size]
I do know what you mean i would have done it properly if i could but i figured getting the job done was better than not.
