Title: Number plate......how does this work ?
Post by: kevpuk on 28 December 2008, 18:10:35
I bought my Omega with a private plate, and - thinking there could be pennies in this - thought I would see about selling the plate :)

So....filled out an online valuation form with one of the many hits Google threw up and they are offering £500 (!) Net of all charges etc.  ;D Obviously, that is based on actually selling.....although I think there are some places that buy directly from you too....

So, my question is, what happens around getting a 'normal' registration back ? I think I understand it that the DVLA will have 'deactivated' the original plate the car had.....and that it can be reactivated on this car only ?

Anyone know more on this ? Bottom line, if I can get that sort of money then a nice service and cambelt change is imminent  8-)

You have pretty much summed it up.  Once the 'private plate' is transferred off (and that may take longer than you think, depending on the dealer you are dealing with) the original VRM is reactivated on the car.

What you can also do, but will cost you an initial outlay, is to place the private plate on retention.  In other words, transfer the VRM off the car onto paper where it can stay for a year, and can be extended.  Meantime, the plate is available for sale through your chosen dealer.

Bear in mind that the dealers are selling the plate on commission and thus their profit is also in the sale as well....    :y

OK, thanks.

So, if the plate stays on the car (cost-free option !) then I wait for it to sell and then can put on plates bearing original details ? Fees involved in this ? I imagine DVLA need telling......

Otherwise, can transfer the plate to certificate form and then go immediately ahead with change back to original - but this will cost me moolah.....

So far seems sensible to leave the plate as is for now ? Wait and see if it sells......guess there is no harm these bods having it up for sale ?

If you are in no rush to sell the car, let the transfer firm do the work and let them pay the appropriate fees to DVLA.  Remember to ensure the monies you are quoted are net to you, in other words, thats your profit and the fees are down to the agency.

Cost to put plate on retention is, I think, either £105 or £125.  Should really know, did my own plate a few weeks back but cannot remember!

I suspect if you put it up for sale, it might be a while before you hear anything...

i've sold a few plates over the years and the companies i've dealt with have always included the dvla transfer fee for replacement plate but obviously it all depends on value of plate etc.

used these before:

Dont get too excited about a company offering you £500 if you can sell it through them.

We did this with an old plate of mine T--- MLS and didnt hear a word from them EVER again........no calls, no sale.....NOTHING.

Bloody useless !!!

My brother had S60 --- but the same happened for him too......just got no comms at all from the company....RegTransfers if I remember correctly.

The reason they offer £500 is so they can then sell it for £800 as they advertised mine at.....!!

Problem is that similar numbers were selling directly from the DVLA website at £250 fully inclusive.
