had a cracking first day on the bike stuff, spent the morning on a 125cc again getting used to it, did turn in the roads (which i still had trouble with) emergency stops and all the usual stuff.
Then about 11, it was on to the big 500 cc bikes 8-)
Straight away i found them much easier, more feel with everything, clutch was not so soggy actually could feel something, same with rear brake.
First time out i was a nervous wreck, feked up gear changes and bunny hopping it.
But after 2 hours, had nailed it, smooth away from the lines, slipping clutch in corners to control the speed.
Best bit of it all, is the turns in the road i found easier on the bigger bike! :o
Straight away did it spot on, time and time again, found it so much easier. Pulled onto some dual carriageway and the instructor said to open her up, reved it to about 7k rpm, and went from about 30 ish to 65 almost instantly, fek me did that feel fast! :)
Only downside, i had to buy some new bigger trousers, on the bike ones i bought were too small, but rest of the gear worked great, other people learning were frozen solid by the end of the day, i was just nice and snug! Could have stayed out there allllllll day!

slipping clutch in corners to control the speed. ......
:-? Is that something you've been taught? Just sounds strange to me. :-/

Yup, slow speed corners, junctions ect, ride the back brake, on the clutch biting point / slipping point and keep the engine revs 'busy' (around 3k rpm)
-
Same here. Not heard of slipping the clutch to control speed. :o

And me, and also 7k RPM and only 65mph, where you in second gear ::) ::) ::)

yup, pulled out into second, then was asked to give it large, so i did!
Spent about 4 hours slipping the clutch, turn in the road especially, slipping it, keeping revs up, in total control, if bike starts to lean or something just let the clutch out 1mm.
I could turn the ER5 within a standard width road easily now in one turn, feet off the ground.
-
Ah right. It's probably better described as riding or feathering the clutch. Same applies when riding at walking pace.
Not sure I like the idea of new riders being told to "keep the revs busy" unless the instructor keeps it for riders he/she is happy with as regards clutch control.
Get that wrong and you're in the next post code before you know it. ;D
Glad to hear keeping at it. Fair doos to anyone that passes their bike test these days. It's so complicated, I work in the bike industry and I haven't a clue as to what exactly the test comprises of nowadays.

it's not just a figure 8 around the block anymore .... so they say :y :y :y

I know nothing about bikes, but slipping the clutch sounds odd to me?
When you say this, are you slipping the clutch in 1st - going really slow... or slipping the clutch in say 2nd or 3rd? If that was the case, I would have said you needed to change down a gear before the corner so you dont have to slip it? But like I said, I havn't a clue about bikes. ::)
Maybe the instructors good mates with a repair shop that just replace clutches all day long? :o
-
first off there is theory.... 50 questions multiple choice, i got 48 right :) (pass rate is 43)
Then hazard perception of theory watch 14 video clips, each has 1 danger in it, 1 has 2. You have to click when you see a danger could develop, 5 points per danger, they count down the closer to the danger, often faster than seconds.
I got 64 out of 75.
Then its the practical, will be asked to do emergency stop and turn in the road. Maybe asked for hill start, angled start, maybe asked questions about your bike and asked to wheel it around. Test is about 50 mins long.
:y

Motorbike clutches are designed to be slipped, generally done in 1,2,3 gears, and its just like the biting point in the car. But unlike a car, you ride it, while holding the rear back brake, was doing that in figure of 8's and turn in the road, and pulling away from junctions.
Engine 'busy' means around 3.0 - 3.5k rpm revs wise.
-
ER5, although fairly torquey like most 500 twins, doesn't liven up until 6k rpm. Low redline of about 10k IIRC.
I think tunnie means feathering the clutch, as you do on slow speed manuevers such as mini roundabouts - often with a bit of rear brake if you need stability.
Tunnie, if ever you go on my bike, do NOT drop it to 2nd and floor it - I reckon you'd be dead within 5s ;D
More tomorrow?

Yeah, nothing but manoeuvrings tomorrow.
I am feeling better about the turn in the road, carpark i had trouble with them on 125, found it easier on the ER5!
I could do it at the top of the car park, when i had a curb to look at, always fcked up the bottom one (nothing to fix on)
Out on the road, i looked where i had to put the bike and it went there, was really chuffed about that cause i was finding them hard in the car park.

Yes, they are designed to be feathered for low speed stuff. Surprising difficult to shag a bike clutch, unlike car ones

I misheard my examinaer 7 turned the wrong way at the end of the road. I wondered why I couldn't find him ;D ;D Still passed though. :y

ER5, should be able to do u-turn on full lock without issue...

Most certainly treat the throttle with respect.
Look at it this way...the average multi-bucks super car is about 4+ secs to 60mph. Any 1000cc sports bike will do it in less than 3.
Even a 500cc comuter bike will leave the average "Hot Hatch" up to 60mph.
-
Glad you're enjoying it Tunnie... You'll never regret getting the license but will spend a lot of time "coveting" other bikes ::) ::) :-X :-X :y :y
I learnt on an ER5... Very forgiving really... Next bike I rode was a CBR600 and I made the mistake of nailing it in 2nd like I did on the ER5... Had to change my pants after that but taught me a vital lesson... Treat it with respect :y :y :y

My ER5 with a fatty on the top would deal with MGZT 190 I used to see every morning. Couldn't deal with the Monaros though, or the DB9 around the corner (live in a town full of Monaros and Astons).
Now, the ZX10.......
-
i really liked the ER5, nice and easy to ride, more so than the 125cc thingys.
Had plenty of poke to scare me silly, i am seriously considering getting one if i pass my test.
They can be had for sub 1k too, so not expensive either.

A Porsche was being an arse soon after I got the ZX10, we were doing around 90. So, in 4th, I gunned it (nicely in the power band). Almost slipped off the back, couldn't get forward enough to release throttle or change up. Redlines at 140 in 4th.....

Any of the 500 twins would make an excellent first bike. I'd advise against going for anything much more powerful, or more expensive. I hope you never fall off (trust me, it hurts), but its likely you'll drop it pushing into your garage, or a silly low speed drop (eg, heavy front brake at low speed corner)

I had it so easy, passed the single part test on a 550 with a sidecar attached - even argued with the examiner about proper use of brakes on a corner - and then a week later had removed the sidecar and was blasting around solo...
-
feathering the clutch and keeping the revs constant you can check the speed and maneuverability with the rear brake pedal at low speeds.
the next thing will be reverse steering ! bend to the right , in a bit fast pull back a bit on the left grip ::) dont seem right untill you have mastered it :y
-
you have to be totally on the ball when on a bike, split second in london and your be down and out.
my dad did all his in the raf, bike, cars, lorries and coaches.then flying and then the instructor jumped out the plane and left him to bring it down, alone. said he's never shite himself so much in his life

lol what about the kawasaki zx14 :P kill his self in 5th in 6? 7? seconds with full throttle :P
-
Congrats on doing so well so soon. No doubt you are listening to your instructor and doing what he/she wants... :y
Personal comment - Slipping the clutch and dragging the back brake in first to do fig 8's and turn in the road is fine. Would not try to keep that habit when out on the open road and in any other gear other than first, doing anything other than a fig 8 or turning the bike.... Your soon deaded trying that in 2nd or 3rd on a country corner... :o
As a matter of personal pride, did the whole CBT/DAS manouver thing on an FJ1200 including the fig 8 and road turn... Had to work hard, but worth it for the street smarts.... :y
-
Tunnie .... have you got a mate who's got a mx bike ? if you have go have a day on it with him as it will make a far better rider as you will learn far better machine control ;D ;D ;D But 1st get the DAS out of the way 8-) 8-)

Did the same on my class 1 HGV years ago. Already had class 2 so felt more relaxed. Did the reversing & emergency stop exercises, ready to leave the test centre i was told to make a left turn. Checked all mirors etc & executed a text book right turn!!! Test nerves, still passed. :y

Good going - I passed in 1980 at the age of 17
-
TB has his ZX-10 just down the road ;)
Brucie - Only ever slipped and ride the brake on 1st & 2nd gears, going around all the tight estate roads, some of them are a tad tight so using the clutch some of those, ones not so tight just use a little throttle with the rear brake on :)
-
Not sure I would be riding the clutch being honest Tunnie either. Turning in the road, cones or figure of 8 seems right feathering the back brake, but as for second gear and pulling the clutch around a corner, i would have suggested dropping a gear and riding the bike around, but I ain't an instructor.
The only word of advise I would give is go steady mate until you get used to the bike, each bike feels different, handles differently. Make sure your tyres are at the right pressure that makes a huge difference.
I was a Two Stroke Manic with LC's and YPVS' then getting on to a four stroke was a different ball game all together.
As for this ER5 have a look at this link :y

I think the slipping/feathering the clutch is something which is taught to learners to help them maintain control without being jerky on the throttle and possibly letting the bike run away from them.
Over time with more experience and confidence better/finer throttle control will come, and the need for feathering the clutch should be reduced to only very slow/tight turns.

I took my test on a GP100, all we could afford as my parents didn't have a car at the time so bought a cheap bike which I was responisble for ALL running costs and I helped towards the money out of summer jobs.
Yes I did live miles from anywhere and my parents dumped the car to save money, mum had a C90 dad a GS850

When I passed my test in 1988 my Mum and Dad bought me a GSX 250 which I was pleased about. I went on the Egg Run (which thousands of bikers ride around Stoke-on-Trent picking Easter Eggs off people at the side of the rode for Charity) and an RD125 came blasting past me.. I was gutted the Suzuki was loads bigger. I had the GSX250 less than a fortnight. I then had a bank loan and my first RD350 YPVS N1, what a bike awesome. They are fetching heavy money now if you have a good one.

Now they do sound nice with Microns on :y .....
Heathen! :o They look far better with the original 3 into 3 exhaust set up ;D :y :y :y

The 500 mach 3 was the one to have,an absolute animal in its day.
Had a lot of fun and a few scary moments on one of those. :)
-
I had a new kwak kh250 sitting in the shop waiting for me to pick up on my 17th birthday (28th oct.) I had a little accident on the 12th and when I came out of hospital just before xmas the parents had cancelled the order for the bike,I tried to convince them that I needed it even more now as I couldnt really walk, and I promised I would find a way of strapping my crutches on safely but they just refused to be reasonable about it. ;D
Now they do sound nice with Microns on :y
That would have been a mega prezzie Albs :o
Oh and the dropping hints for your Birthday have been noted ;D
It's only January........... ;D ;D ;D
And parents can be so unreasonable, told my daughter tonight that if she did not go to sleep then the cuddly toy bought today would be taken back in the morning.....................feel guilty now as she usualy goes straight to sleep when she goes to bed............... ::)
You Meanie, when you have given a Prezzie especially a Teddy you can't threaten to take it back ;D ;D ;D
Tight Git ;D
You should feel Guilty :P
I do as she is usually not problem at bed time at all :-[ we need to get back into normal routines........ ;D

KH250. What a bike. Before you all dive in & say what was faster or handled better, yeah fair go but the KH was my fave bike for the size & time for pure grin factor. The 3 sets of points were a bitch to keep right & the centre pot had a mind of it's own from cold, usually deciding to kick in on a roundabout when you were on full throttle on two cylinders shooting you out of the next exit whether you meant to go that way or not with a scream to die for. not to mention getting hot in a straight line cos the front wheel kept the wind off.
But when they were good they were the bollix in the late 70's! 8-)
-
Didn't they do a KH400 too?

If nothing else ... they looked the part too. All from an era where all the tuition you got was ...... accelerator, clutch, brake and brake ..... off you go son!! :o :o

LOL A mates KH 250 was the first 250 I had a go on. HMS Fisgard .... late 1979/early 1980-ish ;D ;D
it's not there any more. :'(
-
Didn't they do a KH400 too?
yep, and a 500 and 750 - all 2 stroke triples,then of course there was the 900 z1 - 4 cylinder/4 stroke.
Kwaks were and probably still are my favourite bike manufacturer, always made hooligan bikes.
Talking of 70,s bikes,my mate has a Laverda Jota as his road bike and races a 70,s TZ350 yamaha(the one that used to win the 250/350 world championship every year) he also races a 80,s 350 lc.
Had a ride on the TZ and the Elsie last year- great fun, just like the old days. :)

Wasn't a huge fan of Kawasaki's been honest although the z900 was very nice... oh and the KR1s was nice
I liked Elsies obviously, RG 500's, RGV 250, RD500 :y
There is a bloke across the road who has one of those, it sounds nice when he revs it up... he also has a Triumph 2300cc that sounds like a hotrod ;D
-
The elsie is fun,I think its about 60bhp,and weighs break all, anything that can be taken off has been. The TZ is even faster but its quite rare and valuable so I didnt thrash it too hard as I didnt want to have to pay for it.
The Jota was the fastest thing you could buy in the mid 70,s but it is a bit tame by modern standards,my cbr leaves it for dead.

Him across the road says the same, I hadn't ever heard of one :-/
Saw one of the Tz's at the bike show :y
-
Top speed on the Jota was over 140,which in the mid seventies was bloody fast.
Couldnt believe how stiff the suspension was on the TZ,every time it went over a bump it felt like the rear shock top mount was attempting to sodomise me. ;D ;D
-
didnt they make a mirage to? i remember the jota big old triple thing my cousins old man had one in orange , he took the p-ss out ov me cos i had an x7 ! >:(wanger ;D last bike i had was a thunderace sold it when we moved here , no drive :(

I have one and think they are a brilliant bike :y
-
they are a good bike ( thunderace ) nearly as quick as my pals r1 and much nicer to ride, mind you going back 7 years :-/ jesus if only i had all of them lined up outside that i have owned the logbook for :'(
.... :) good to think back :y

All this bike talk is bad for the bank balance... I sold my CBR600FX to a dealer in Chelmsford almost exactly 4 years agm because my new house didn't have a garage! I've missed having a bike dearly since then but can't justify getting another untill I've got a garage and sorted out the 5 cars on the drive :o :o ::) ::)
-
Heres a picture to make you old timers drool.....http://www.classicbikes.co.uk/machine2.html that includes me as well ;D ;D ;D
-
Good going - I passed in 1980 at the age of 17
1974 for me......... on a Honda CB250 K4........ :y :y :y
You must have been a shadow of yourself then ;D :D ::) :P
i passed my bike test at 17 on a rd125dxpre rdlc days never look back fastest things on the road bikes and you dont have to spend 100k to embarass car drivers
I ran a GS250T for a few years, not quick but cheap and comfy.
I bought a GSX250 for £50 - repaired it (carb spring required plus exhaust) got 100 out of it then sold to a neighbour, only used it when my 600 was off the road requiring a tyre - Pireeli shredded in 1000 mile, Michelin lasted 5000 and gripped better

I used to know an owner and it kept cuttting out, ended up with me giving his pillion a lift and hitting a genuine 80 2 up on the 100

well i have survived another day!
Spent the entire day going around the industrial estate practicing everything!
More confident turning the ER5 now, can turn it tigher, feel i have more control. gear changes becoming more natural and fluid.
Still slipping/feathering the clutch in slow speed stuff, (turn in the road, fig of 8) but i also use it when in 2nd turning into junctions to keep the bike under control. Also when pulling out on first, its being feathered until i am on the correct side of the road.
Off to Banbury tomorrow learning the test routes!
-
Don't know if you saw the link I posted Tunnie about this ER5 they dont seem to be a bad bike :y

Masking tape.... Gaffer tape is just a wee bit TOO sticky.... ;D

LOL - you just reminded me about our xmas piss-up. I was asking one of the girls how they overcame 'chappel hat pegs' in that weather (it was bloody freezing). She said sellotape, but apparently it really smarts when you take it off!
Don't even ask how we got on to the subject of her tits...

back on subject, even though it was -7.5 yesterday morning, and -6.0 degrees today my gear really kept me warm.
Barley got about freezing all day, half the people taking the DAS kept complaining they were soooo cold, i was just nice and snug.
Supposed to be even colder tomorrow!
-
ohhhhhhhhh fek :o
The hottest it will get tomorrow, the hottest..... -5 :o :o

Pull the chin straps out as you take your lid off. Fore finger and thumb to pull the straps away from your head/ear other 3 fingers and palm to lift the lid up and off. Never really thought about lid removal until you mentioned it.
Makes me laugh when you see actors take crash helmets on and off on the telly. Usually balance on head then reach up on top and pull down, looks like they fell off a horse and are protecting their head.
Then full palm print on the visor as they close it. Tut tut.
Boon and Mark Fouler of eastenders being a couple of exceptions.
Have a look at the CB 500 as well Tunnie, very similar bike, better build quality as its a Honda, handles well, will deck out the frame rails with sticky tires and decent rear sets no problem. Same bike Mr Toseland made his mark on in the CB 500 cup. Seen a few dispatchers lean em right over on the road. David silver spares alone make it worth paying a few quid extra for a Honda, far cheaper than a dealer for genuine parts as a rule last i looked, which is a while ago now tho.
To be honest you may see a few girls owning the Kawasaki. :-X .... on second thoughts maybe the Kwack is a better idea after all. :-) :y

As said to Tunnie previously, any of the 500 twins is a good starter. The Honda is much more comfy over long distances than the kwacker, but then is a lot more expensive to buy 2nd hand for a good one. Suzuki GS500 not bad either.

Saying that, after this cold snap, wonder if tunnie fancies part faired bike, eg CB500S ;D

'dangle berries'!
Training canceled. Even car tests are being canceled at the test centre, if tests are not running they are not allowed to train.
My test is at 11am tomorrow, and looking at the weather i bet thats canceled too.
Bugger bugger bugger! >:(
I was looking forward today, actually doing some proper road riding, i have such little experience of actually being on the road. only spent about 2 maybe 3 hours in total out on the open road, rest has been on the back of the industrial estate or in car parks :'(

twas inevitable - my road is still white, with slushy bits where the tracks are beginning to appear.
