Title: Friggin HP
Post by: TheBoy on 11 January 2009, 21:58:18
My bloody laptop cannot burn to fairly common Verbatim DataLife Plus 4x DVD+RW rewritables  >:(

Look up the drive model number on the net - made by those gay boys at Matshita/Panasonic - and everyone is moaning about it.

So, being a common media, have Panasonic released an updated firmware? Not a chance. Tossers.

No wonder that Panasonic are call Matshita  >:(

In fairness, I have a particular dislike of HP stuff (since they went off the rails in late 90s), but have been struggling to find a serious fault with this laptop....   ....and its taken me 14 months

I did like Compaq/HP!

The laptop I’m using now (Compaq Presario X1000) works fine, and feels like it’s well built (Doesn’t bend etc). Its about 4 years old I would think, and apart from a small amount of wear and tear, its fine!

I got it second hand on ebay about 2 years ago, and since then I bet its been turned on longer than its been turned off!

Only faults with it are:
Battery (needs a new one, as it only lasts about 20 mins - but that’s fully expected, as I use it on battery at least once a day!)
DC Socket (I’m surprised its lasted this long TBH, I’m always catching it on stuff! I will fit a new one when I get some free time, for now I just have to use the docking station)
Speakers (The right hand speaker on the laptop doesn't go very loud - works fine with headphones / amp though!)

However, at work (IT Repair shop) I’m seeing loads of HP / Compaq’s.

DV2000 and DV6000's, I wouldn’t buy one! They all have a dead motherboard almost!   :-/

*never* liked HP/Compaq...
Didn't mind DELL though, my last laptop before the Acer I have now was a Dell...

Only issue I have with the Acer now though is the Toshita HDDVD Drive in it, its goosed... Never worked properly (randomly mounts invisible discs and never releases untill its powered down) Keep meaning to replace it with a BD Drive, but meh there to expensive...

Still, no issues with burning discs (when it works)...

Whoever said they liked their Acer - did it work long enough to boot it up the first time ;D

As to Panasonic and Sony - my last Optiarc (JV between NEC and Sony) lasted about 13 months before dying.  rather Sony  >:(

Ive found Acers to be fairly reliable, however they always feel like somethings going to fall/snap off it! :(

Yeah, nought of use.

Neither HP nor Panasonic seem to offer any firmware upgrades, which is what it will need to write to this media.

Fortunately, I don't use RW much, but I do insist on quality media (hence always select Verbatim or TY), so its a bugger that I can't use this common, premium media  >:(
