I was stopped by the police who said I was driving with my front fog lights on, I thought they were spot lights - they show green on the dash and the fog lights generally show orange on the dash - I did argue with him and said that I did not have fog lights on, was I wrong.....Pauline
-
Yes - they are fog lights
-
front are green and rear are orange 8-)

Fog lights....
....look at the symbol and its a dead give away....picture of a light with wavey lines to indicate fog.

The fog light excuses have well and truly dried up when it comes to the cops, If you had pleaded ignorant and appologised politely they would have given you a friendly warning, Arguing with officers only gets their backs up and rouses other suspisions ("why is h/she behaving erraticaly") and can ultimately lead to being charged for the offence.
I learnt my lesson as a kid, and now show respect even if the officers can be intimidating.
Hopefully you just got a warning, but remember they are not "look at me lights"

...except on BMW's, where they mean 'look at me, I'm a t@sser' ;)

only my rears light up as a warning, am i missing a bulb??? :-/
-
that or you have the older style clocks, meaning your switch should light up green instead. you should be able to tell if you shine a torch at the clocks and you can see the outline of the front fog symbol
-
All cars with front fogs use a green indicator to show they are on. What is odd is, unlike the rears on most modern cars, I have never been in a car that resets them to off next time you start the car.
Up to 1997, indicator on the switch itself, 1998 on, indicator on dash.

Thats always struck me as weird too!

Mine kind of does - you need full beam on to have fogs on ( cant drive with side lights and fogs together) So when you stop, and turn off lights, by way of the set up, fogs also go off.
When you continue driving fogs are off untill you put on headlights back on and select fogs again....

But a very good idea!

i will check but i am sure the vectra resets its self once the lights are turned off
-
was right
turn on lights and turn on fogs either f/r and when u switch lights off the fogs switch off and need to be turned on again for the next time
good idea me thinks so why not the omega >:(

Coming back from Poole the other night, I saw hoardes of cars with front fogs on. It wasn't remotely foggy.
There are no excuses, if people don't know the various fundemental controls of their vehicles (such as lights), then they're not in a position to safely use them on the road.
Sorry if I sound a little terse - I am particularly fed up with people who do this following my endurance of "foglighters" the other evening....

You have to use your front fog lights with you sidelights is the advice i recieved from a police officer who stopped me for this. Apparantly using them with dipped beam or full beam lights is illegal. They are there to light up the road underneath bad fog so that your main lights don't just light up the fog. Due to this your front fog lights should be used even less than your rear ones.
I personally don't see what the fuss is about them I don't find them particularily dazzling when other drivers use them. And i think they light up the road a little bit better if you don't have HiD's. Which are quite dazzling when your travelling the other way up a road, but completely legal (and nice!).

The Ashtray also turns its fog rear fogs off with the ignition but the front also stay on :-? :-?
is it a Vauxhall thing?

It's a ruddy good idea, because most of the cretins who turn the "fog button" on at the slightest provocation, also appear to drive around for the rest of the winter wondering what the yellow light is for. >:(
At least it'll be turned off at the MOT test once a year if it's a manual switch. >:(
I actually came up behind someone in quite thick fog the other day, and they turned off their rear fog lights once they saw me in their mirrors and were sure I'd seen them. An astonishing level of awareness and common sense to be displayed on the road these days.

They are uncontrolled, thus often dazzle. Unlike HIDs, which due to their lenses, automatic levelling, and washing system, do not glare or dazzle

yeah, in an ideal world.... the theory is right but not all of them are doing what they say on the tin.

Yep. Same light output as a headlight but no "cutoff" line so they should be regarded as of a similar dazzling capability as main beams, IMHO.

I'm sure there used to be a rule about them going off when main beam was on...

Sorry, not meaning to offend, but this is utter 'dangle berries'....
Fog lights are for use in fog or falling snow or other seriously reduced visibility, taken to be 100 metres or less.
They are used with dipped beam lamps, not side lights. Any other use is technically unlawfull.
As to dazzling, the headlights are set to produce a particular beam pattern so as to avoid dazzle to oncoming motorists. Fog lamps do not have the same MOT-able characteristics other than if fitted, they must work. Only caveat to that is that ANY lamp fitted to avehicle must not cause 'undue dazzle'.
Front fogs are designed to light up an area immediately in front of the vehicle and do not have any significant 'range' unlike auxiliary headlamps or front spots which operate in conjunction with the main beam.

There was, but somehow now superceded. I think it was in the same era as Dim-Dip lighting where the headlamps were partially fired with the sidelights with ignition running....

Normally due to wrongly adjusted headlights.....and the same can happen with halogens!
There only light sources, there is nothing magic about HID bulbs
-
Am i missing something, I thought all cars reset their fog lights when lights turned off, our Mig, Citroen and Mitsu do...... :)
-
I was stopped for fog lights on many years ago and breathalysed. I had not had any alcohol fortunately. Total surprise at the time that fog lights would result in being pulled over. I had accidentally caught the switch.
On a separate note is there a light for the cruise control on a 2001 Elite V6 3.2? I have had the car since 2002 and never seen a cruise light -assumed it did not have one but maybe I am a bulb missing
-
There is no dash light to indicate cruise operation...
