Title: L plate omega
Post by: MadMark73 on 19 January 2009, 22:24:25
Hi all. Have been offered an L reg omega saloon for 100 pounds. Cambelt has snapped. Mot till sep and private plate. And four recent tyres. Is it worth it.And if so is it a replacement engine or headrebuild?

Might be worth it for the tires alone

I was thinking be worth it for the plate alone if a private plate

Sounds like the plate is worth more than the car ;D

That was my train of thought but SWMBO wants a burgandy saloon and I know if I turn up with it SWMBO will probably say thats mine, Fix it.

As an "L" plate it must be one of the first Omega's after the Carlton / Senator range went out of production! :o :o

Personally I would doubt the worth of spending a lot of cash on a car so old, but what is the mileage? :-? :-?  Is much of its running gear, transmission, equipment, let alone that damaged engine, in need of replacement?  Think of the cost of all that. :o :o

A lot newer miggy can be obtained complete, with everything in working order for what it is going to cost you to repair and maintain this miggy to get it on the road and give you a good return / worthwhile economic running. ;) ;)

Early registered models (the ones the dealers tried to sell for that bit extra to the eagerly awaiting mugs that had the cash to pay ful whack) were L plates, seen a few about, my philosophy is to never buy the first of anything, well except a mk1 capri  ;)

Get an idea of the value of the plate from one of the many plate sales companies on the net.  be aware of the difference between a straight purchase price by them and a sell on commission, then work a value from there.  As scrap, it should still get the better part of your ton and you keep then plate on retention, if its worth that much.  Otherwise, pass.....

has to be mot'd and taxed to transfer or retain a plate

MOT september, do insurance transfer to get certificate, tax it and loose a month when you cash it back in, and take the plate off...

Works for me at the LVLO anyway....   ;)

How do you go about getting a price for selling a private plate?

Just google for cherished number plate dealers.  Most of them have an online valuation search facility....   :y

It will depend on a number of things, I believe, including if the car becomes accident damaged/insurance total loss whilst the private plate is on and whether its been out of tax/mot for an extended period.  If the latter, I think the plate becomes irrecoverable, but not 100% on that....

depends how long after such accident/mot expiry occured as far as i know

a donor vehicle needs to technically be roadworthy by DVLA rules for someone to have it's plate removed, because it needs to be re-registered to its original (or available age related) number, but  if you crash your car and write it off then its not technically road worthy, so they give a time limit of something like a month to get your plate off a written off car so you dont lose out
