As ITV2 went into sales pitch mode last night the usual JML sihte came on.
They advertised thier Halogen Oven.
http://www.jmldirect.com/Halogen-Oven-PH1500/
Looks natty, easy to clean, easily stored.
My sister has had an halogen hob for years and from what I gather she is happy with it.
Not sure whether to go for one or not.
Anyone got one or seen them in action.
Welcome any comments.

lol....the worlds cheapest heating element is a 500W halogen bulb....so draw your own conclusions on if its done for cost or as a superior method of cooking!

There're a couple of reviews here:

I know mrs Bitz has an electric one in her little room where the food comes from, wouldnt know if its got any halogen in it. :D
-
i know our hob here is halogen, and works well. Its a conventional oven though
-
Halogen hobs are about the best electric hob you can get mainly because the halogen filaments only have a fraction of the thermal mass of the ceramic equivalents and hence are more controllable.
The ultimate hob is gas obviously.
As for the claims it makes for heat up time etc, its not surprising, its a tiny thing so the Kw per m2 of heat will be very high where as a convential electric oven will be much lower....
I suspect it will fall down on the obvious things
1) Its small.....so not good if you want to oven cook more than one thing
2) Extended cooking times, its insulation is practicaly zero unlike modern ovens which stay hot for bloody hours!
To me, its just another bloody gimmick to try and store in the kitchen!

I got one for my sister this Crimbo from JML. She's well pleased with it. Everything from Cheese on Toast to the Sunday roast...and everything in-between.

I'm no expert in the kitchen. In fact I'm banned from there due to being too messy and incompitent.
But she reckons the hob is on a par with a standard gas hob. And, apparently, a damn sight easier to clean on the rare occasionas I do attempt to use it ;D
-
Nah.....gas hob is much more controllable and capable of 2-3 times the heat output if needed!
What do women know!
Yes, possibly easier to clean.....but they are only for show anyway arnt they

I may understand the technicalities better than her, but really do have to bow to her experience when it comes to actually using it. I could probably just about manage beans on toast ;D
Fair play to The Old Bag, she does muster up a decent meal most evenings (apart from Tuesday - Tuesday Chip Night)

2) Extended cooking times, its insulation is practicaly zeero unlike modern ovens which stay hot for bloody hours!

I also thought "Just a gimmick" but it's not, honestly ! I'm as big a sceptic as any when it comes to things advertised on these shopping channels.
Ok, It won't do the Crimbo 5 stone Turkey, but it'll do a fair sized chicken with ease. Cooking times are significantly reduced. No pre-heating the oven. It starts cooking as soon as it's turned on.
-
Oddly, as our cooker is 10-15yrs old now, we looked at replacing it, but nobody seems to do halogen hobs now, or if they do, only 1 or 2 out of the 4 being halogen, rest ceramic :(

Quite possibly but, for extended cooking times it will use moe energy.....a modern oven, once upto temp, hardly ever comes on again....that thing will need to run fairly falt out for the full period.
So in reality
You gain slightly faster heatup times (5mins on say a modern oven)
Higher electric bils for anything over say 30-40 mins cooking time.
Got to give them thier dues, its well marketed!

Possibly because the modern ceramic units heat up almost as fast now.....and are flush glass types like the hologen ones

Ours is a Siemens induction hob. I don't know nor want to know how much it cost :-? :-?. As controllable as gas, but you need a set of ferous based pans. :y

Will never replace proper oven for the sunday roast full monty for a family of four+, but a mid-week meal of oven chips, spicy potatoe wedges and chicken cutlets for 4 was done with ease, from turn-on to tuck-in was about 25mins.

Called up my sisters this evening and in passing mentioned we were discussing the halogen oven on the O.O.F (She was somewhat :o, but I explained that anything goes on Gen.Chat)
Anyhoo, she says she hasn't used the oven since getting the H/Oven. Used the hobs for veg etc. but not the actual oven.

Not surprised she was shocked - a group of dirty, greasy spanner twirlers talking about womens' work :o

Got curious enough to go in the room where the food comes from and have a look.found this cooking machine which you are speaking of and it it says halogen on it,none the wiser really as it doesnt appear to have headlights. :-/ :-/

Nah, told her we're all at ease with our feminine sides. Mentioned that TB was in the process of wiring in a hair dryer and curling tongs to the drivers seat of his Miggy.
;D

got inspired after seeing similar in an MX5. :y ::) :D ;D

I'm also banned from the dishwasher after she came home early, was impressed to see I'd put the dishwasher on, until she started to unload it - she wasn't sure which cupboard the coolant bottles or the caliper mounting brackets ::)

Best parts cleaner known to man. :y.....oven can be handy for getting a bit of heat into smallish items before painting as well. :y :)

Remember as a child, on many a winter morning, my Dad putting the Distributor cap, complete with HT leads in the oven to dry them cos the car would not start ::) ::) ::) Would not mind but the car was a company car, so newish. Mk 2 Cortina 1600. E Reg (1967)

Had a new Stoves gas hob and electric oven fitted two years ago.
I've used the oven once...to bake the paint after spraying the heads and barrels of my Harley.
