I went from paper to plastic on 05-05-05, and the expiry seems to be one day shy of ten years.

I did pass my test on 19-06-97.

Does this mean you have to place a new pic on your licence every ten years?

Quite intriguing Jimbo!

What made you think of this?

Yes

And what winds ME up on this .. when I added my LGV and PCV entitlements in 2007 I had to provide a new photo (and pay) ... but this didn't extend the license .. oh no .. I still have to renew .. at a cost .... in 2010 ..

Rip Off or what .... :(

I got an email from a mate saying that he was threatened with a £1000 fine when stopped by the fuzz because his license had run out. He genuinely thought that his license ran until he was 70. It appears to be a little known fact and will cost £17.50 to renew it. Yet another stealth tax  >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

I think the "we'll tell you 2 months before" is a very recent addition due to pressure from the press and MP's ..

Renewing your photo
With a renewal application

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will send you a renewal application pack two months before your photo is due to expire. You’ll need to:

complete the enclosed form
include a new passport type photo of yourself that’s been taken within the last month (you don’t need the back of the photo signed)
return both parts of your driving licence (photocard and counterpart document)
enclose a cheque or postal order for £17.50 (no fee is needed if you have a medical short period licence or you’re aged 70 or over)
send your completed application and fee to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1DH

the cost of driving is going up again >:(

For the £17.50 they charge to renew they at leat ought to send a reminder like they do for a tax disc.

mine is covered at cost of customer but if new applicants after2011 are not holding a drivers cpc then they willnot be considered and this is the protocol of most hauliers

suppose that technically any vehicle with more than 1 seat could be a pcv so yes you are correct psv is the correct term.
but when i tow a 30ft trailer on my 44tonne unit and a 7.5tonner with a 28ft trailer overtakes me which is the lgv (large goods vehicle)

Its all 'dangle berries' though as even 7,5 tonners are restricted now so..... all the small/panic loads now have to travel at the restricted speed hence more traffic travelling slowly hence more time stuck behind one . Hence more argument for the government to say the roads are "congested" let lay a tax on it.
I dont get it i can do 62mph in a coach ... yet wagons are stuck at (correct me if i am wrong ) 56mph... yet i carry upto 70 lives on board???????????
 A) ( no offence) but we should get more money as we have human cargo and b) we should be made to  go slower  because of a and c) i wish i had done my wagon licence as my cargo wouldnt whinge at me  ;D
