Just watching ITV4 with some police chase program, they were chasing a Corvette at 165 MPH so the report says. The cops were keeping up with him, what do the cops actually drive over these in the states.
-
mostly they use supercharged V8..

Ford tried to discontinue then a number of years ago but such was the outcry from US and Canadian cops, they reconsidered.... And it lives on.... ;)

The Ford 4.6 is what the used in the MG-ZT V8 @260BHP,so strangled by there emission law 170 would be about right !

To be honest Kev, when I had my Pontiac that handled like a shed. Took the 78 profile standard ryres off and put 60 profile Pireli P6 VR Rated tyres on it and ir was like driving a go-kart. Couldnt believe the difference.

when i was in New York, the cabbie that took us to the airport was an ex-cop car, it bouned around all over the place, tyres squealing on the slightest of corners.
They also get less than 200bhp from the 4.6 V8 :o
Sounded nice enough though...

Well,
I don't like people knocking American cars all the time, remember that a 4.6 v8 in a mustang produces 300bhp and would destroy any omega :y

and they run forever.

Did you have a blanket over your head, or is that type of thing frowned on in the U.S. of A ?

they go ok , it aint the bhp its the torque
omega 3ltr

I think you steer them using a rudder!!
Doug
-
They seem to be using Dodge Chargers more and more at the moment
-
And Cadillacs....
Just goes to show how poor the 4.5 V8 is as it develops little more than a 3.0 V6!
Now the small block Chevvy engine....that is a very flexible and pwoerful unit.

A chap in Norway would dispute that ;D

I have I think a late 1970s Observer book of cars.
Age it like this Rovers - SD1 V8 and P6 2200.
Rootes were Avenger and Hunter
LRs were 2 door RR and Series 3
Fords small car was Mk2 Escort
Lamborghini had a few cars including the LP400 & Uracco.
The Yanks - well they had a few with 80bhp 4.2l sixes. ;D ;D
That is less than the average 1980s 600cc bike, and similar to a same time period 1.6 British car. And specific power was less per litre than many rail traction power units (tuned for reliability).
Those cars would have been better with a detuned 2.0l engine.

Would be interesting though - still think the Norwegian Omega would be quicker. That Corvette is only 880bhp!

A 40 year old dodge charger with 950bhp and enough torque to reverse the big bang ::)

Me, I love old school American muscle cars, but previous posters are right, considering the massive engines the bhp on a lot of them was almost feeble unless they stuck on a great f*ck off supercharger. Where as, as Im sure Ive said before (sorry), the Japs were producing normally aspirated cars making a 100bhp per litre which is no mean feat. Always makes me laugh when I look at some of my old Top Trumps (remember them) and the power output on all these old classic cars in relation to their engine sizes is really poor. How technology comes on eh? Mind you, the styling aint necessarily better!
