Bought disc online today so obviously all docs. in place, disc thru post in 5 working days (usually 2 days) I know it's still an offence not to display the disc in a suitable OOF holder but if i got pulled over or parked the car & an over zealous traffic warden clocked it, despite the fact it's all computerized now & they knew the vehicle was taxed would i still get fined for failiure to display or is it down to the officer/wardens discretion.
I can still use the 'Tina until i get the disc but she's tucked away in the workshop now. :-/

Still get fined, the requirement is to display a valid tax disc.

For discs taken out on line there is an allowance for postal times. Print the receipt at the end of the DVLA transaction and keep it in the car. However it is now the 11th of the month, I assume the disc was to begin on 1st February, it is very late. If it is for the 1st March you should not display it until it comes into force on the 1st of March, on reflection it can't be for March as you can't take them out until the 15th of the month prior to the start date. As VXL V6 said it is an offence not to display a valid disc. You may even be snapped by an ANPAR, the computers take a few days to update, keep the receipt!!!!!!!!

What he said...... :)

I am sure I read somewhere there is a grace period if you have a tax disc on order from the online service and the new tax disc would cover the period in which you are caught. Might be 'dangle berries' though.

Still down to a coppers discrstion if he catches you.
I once had one that fell off the screen on to the floor and the copper who pulled was having none of it.
I picked the tax disc up and explained it to him.
Got read the riot act as I was standing up for myself and got quoted the law regards a tax disc being on display.
He let me off in the end and accepted the problemwas just an old tax disc holder acting up.

There is a small allowance now for those who "tax on-line" .. as I see it, doesn't apply in your case ... :(

You can renew your tax any day from the fifth day of the month.
If you prefer to tax in the last few days of the month, there is now an exemption from the offence of not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month and allows time for the new disc to arrive in the post.
The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires.

Last disc expired 31.12.08, legally sorned from then, new disc starts from 1st of this month. Bought disc within an hour of new MOT so computer records should be up to date.
Was hoping although display law still in place now defunct as any authorities can check a disc has been issued. I've paid for the few days in question so i should be able to use them???? ::)

Should show your VEL on police national computer before you receive, I would keep the confirmation email to hand incase you see a real person

You're allowed 5 days grace after a successful online renewal.

You're allowed 5 days grace after a successful online renewal.
.... where the last issued disc expired immediately before renewal. Does not apply if the vehicle was previously SORN..... ;)

I bought my tax disk online on 31st Jan and it didn't get delivered until tuesday 10th feb! Drove around no probs. As far as I'm concern if you've paid for it and it takes them longer than it should to send it out its their problem!

A couple of years back, I got called out to an IT Job in Sunny Birmingham, the Car was parked almost outside the Premises, on one of those Pay and Display, no return after 2 Hours jobies, got away with it by paying every 2 hours for the first Day, on the second Day got Clamped.
Thinking at first its a 'Parking Thing' I soon discovered it was for No Tax. My valid Tax Disc had fallen down the Dash Board gap.
Lots of phone calls later, even though the authorities could see it was taxed on the system, I ended up having to catch a train back to London then out to Essex to collect, Log Book, Valid Insurance Cert, and Proof of Address (Ultility Bill). The sort of thing you carry arround in your pocket!
Back to Brum next Day only to find the Car had may'ed its way the 'Not so Local Car Pound', More Money!!.
The bottom line to all this, to my Horror was 'Not Displaying a Valid Tax Disc'.
Should have stayed in bed that week :'(.
