Title: Any help with quote from garage for this work pls
Post by: tampon on 10 February 2009, 17:43:29
The mig failed the mot this morning, kickfit can only sort out a few problems themselves and need me to take the car else where to get the rest sprted.

They have quoted me £285 to fit a cat for a 2L, 2000 model, that seem about right ?

also they have quoted £183 for a lamba sensor. Again sound reasonable ?

Also they are charging around a £100 for a tyre which I think is too expensive as it is a cheap run around.( standard cdx alloys)

Any help as to whether this is reasonable or can anyone recommend a garage or person round the uxbridge area ( heathrow )

They say both these are needed to get it through the emissons test.

To start with I would use almost anywhere, if I couldn't do it myself, rather than Kwik Fitup!!! :o :o ::) ::)

If you value your car do not let them touch it!! ::) ::) ::) ::) >:(

As Lizzie rightly states, don't go near these fast-fit mothers.
Best to go to an RMI-affiliated garage - you could do an on-line search.

why do you need a new cat?  did it fail emissions?

Try http://www.cats2go.co.uk for both vat and lambda sensor... I ordered from here for a V6 Passat and they arrived next day at a cost of £234(ish) all in :o :o That's 2 cats and 2 lambda sensors, complete with vehicle specific plugs :y :y

A full £100 cheaper than the next cheapest supplier :y :y :y

Oh... And as for Cant-fit fitters... Wouldn't let them fit a bulb :o ::)

Yes, they said both of these would sort it out.

Can you post the results of the emission test? Wouldn't trust the diagnosis of kwik-fit ::) ::)

For the tyres, I can recommend www.camskill.co.uk - got a set of tyres for my winterbox, they were very helpful and quick delivery... and 2/3rds the price of KF. Find a friendly local tyre fitter to fit the tyre for about a tenner, and you'll be quids in.

And I agree, wouldn't trust KF with anything, alright you get some good employees but they're nowehere near being mechanics...

Definately get a second opinion on the cat and lambda sensor. Take it for an Italian tune up first.

For the price of a tenner's worth of petrol and ignoring the advice of a spotty reject from Currys, you could save a lot of money.

Don't let them fit one of their cats. They are rubbish. Noisy and rought. Cheap wafer thin steel. Ugh. Find a OE 2nd hand one and get someone else to fit it

The test said this
test one
engine speed 2500-3000 pass
co:       <=0.300 %    I got    0.433%   fail
Hc:       <=200ppm    I got    78pp,      pass
Lambda: 0.970-1.030 I got    1.033      fail

2nd
Co:        0.411% fail
Lambda: 1.035    fail

Also failed centre seat belt ( missing ), I think it is just under the seat, if not could I just unbolt the centre restraint completly and it then pass ? ie if it is nto there then they can;t test it ?

Nearside hub bearing assembly ( doesn't say what it failed on just that it did.)

Parking brake below requirement

Rear brake binding

So what the great minds here think.

Got a friend who works for Volvo, he is going to sort the stuff out with the brakes but he said that might be expensive and said it will be a pain in the arse ( thats what friends are for ) and get one of his pals to look at the emissions stuff. Any way I look at it he is going to only charge me a few beers for the work, any ideas on parts for those parts with the brake/hub bearings

I think maybe a new Lambda sensor ( would that change the co rating as well ? ) based on no experience what so ever, and any tips from you guys really.

Thanks to all the guys who shared info as to where to get cats, sensors etc really been useful.

Hmmm... Is there a leak in the exhaust anywhere?

Any leak in the exhaust can be known to cause issues with readings. Secondly, did you give it an Italian Tune Up on the way to the MOT?

Personally, if I were uncomfortable with checking it over myself, I'd find a small independent garage for a second opinion (without telling them about the KF MOT!)

Hub bearing assembly, I assume, means excessively worn wheel bearing.

Seatbelt - Yes, but not advised... It's bound to be there

As for the brakes... Bet it's not binding at all... Probably diff drag ::) ::) :-X

Handbrake - Probably just needs adjusting up :y :y

Hope some of that helps :y :y

Awesome thankyou for your advise, I will pass that on to my buddy.

Cheers

Gets up tp temp fine no problems

Runs absolutely fine

One thing is when it is started the exhaust has always sounded "throaty" for a minute and then when starts to get warm it is like something shuts and it is nice and quiet.

The Guy at kwikfit said that someone had bodged a weird cat on there, said it was square and almost looked like it was off a motorbike. So i would say aftermarket bodged on shite.
