Title: Maplin DVD burner prices - mad
Post by: Martin_1962 on 14 February 2009, 23:41:40
Had a quick look (capacitors and soldering iron bits - came out empty handed) I had a quick nose at the computer prices.

80GB Fujitsu laptop drive £70 - I bought a 100GB two years ago for £65.

Same range MH?2080 MH?2100 IDE.

(OK My Pace Twin uses them - 55 hours now)

DVD burner - £40 - you can get a good one like a Pioneer for under £20.

They are buggers, they never seem to drop thier prices so end up with loads of old stock that gets harder and harder to sell.

CPC seem the same on hard drives and CPU prices most of the time, but they have a better chance of getting rid when some one just wants a like for like replacement after a failure. in the bif silly world of business

I use maplin as a "I need it now and can't wait for it to be delivered" shop.
Although they do occasionally have the odd bargain :y

Maplin prices will always be high - those overheads need paying for.

Their old stock may be a master stroke with prices of computer components rising massively at the moment (as always sold wholesale in USD)

Everything in Maplins is expensive and the component stock is crap now to.

Consider resistors, we currently pay 0.2p each for them (for through hole, less for SMT)....they charge nearly 100 times that!

Thats true, but Craplins are targetting 'home/enthusiast' users, who you're suppliers won't deal with.  Likes of CPC/Farnell do with minimum order levels, but not many home users know about them.

Every time I go in, they never have what I want.  If you want disco shite and overpriced PC stuff, they have it.

I always have trouble getting help from one of the biffs.  So I hang around the computer section, and about 10 swoop down on me asking if they can help.  Then I watch their disappointment as I drag them over to the electronics bit ;D
