I think you can pay £10 for a one off "freeview" card from sky and continue using the box.

Yep... There are a couple of "free to air" channels which you wont get though >:( >:( >:(
I did it for about 5 months and then beat Sky up for a deal when they rang me begging for my business ::) :y :y :y

Tbh i think sky is sh*te. always playing up. only have it for the kids. :)

No sign of TMF or The Hits on Freesat and AFAIK Sky without card is more or less Freesat with different EPG and no record nor ITVHD.
Pretty sure no UK History or Virgin 1 either

cancelled Sky 18 months ago as they do not reward loyalty. said I would stay on £43 per month if they gave me HD free after all the years. no deal so cancelled - very glad I did and put in Freesat HD and retained Sky box with a Maplins cheapo switch between the 2 as I only have single LNB - so got a reasonable setup including HD (limited as it is at present)

That sounds interesting, but you you say it again in non tech speak :y

1. Cancel Sky - if you have been with them for more than 12 months you can keep the box and it will continue to work as long as the viewing card is in.
2. If you have an older dish like me - you will have just one feed coming from it.
3. Decision - if you do not need HD then just carry on with Sky minus the cost and the extras but you will still have a lot of channels and better picture as you get now on Sky rather than normal signal via aerial.
4. If you want HD then you will need an HD Freesat model - mine is a Goodmans - just over £100 one off cost.
5. If you just have the one feed as per point 2. above then you will need a splitter box - about £7 from Maplins except you reverse wire it compared to the instructions that come with it. i.e. connect the feed from your dish to the output and set up wired connections from your Sky box and Freesat to the 2 inputs but it works - so you can get either Freesat or Sky. You may need Sky if for example you use Setanta - Setanta works on Sky not on Freesat.
6. Yes - I may be an anorak and I am the only person in my house that can make all this work easily particularly when you factoer in my Denon 301 surround sound system which is connected via HDMI cable.
Really it is quite simple if you look at back of the boxes - connect Sky via scart and Freesat HD by HDMI cable and use the AV switch on the tv remote to switch between the sources.

get a quad LNB and a Humax HDR :y :y

Once you cancel Sky subscription the viewing card you already have will allow you to view the free to air channels.
I was glad to get rid of Sky a year or two ago. Nothing but repeats. Haven't missed them at all :y :-* :-* :-*
