Title: Best low price 1080p HD TV
Post by: Allenm on 19 February 2009, 13:36:03
I know this has been discussed before, but search let me down, and technology moves on, so here goes again.

I am looking at getting a 32" full HD (1080p) LCD TV.  Don't want to pay silly money, but equally don't want to buy crap!

Anyone recently got a good deal on one they are happy with?

Cheers
Merv

Dabs and Aria keep offering interesting deals.  Maybe worth keeping an eye on them.

If Sainsburys take the same approach as Tesco's on tv/hifi/etc, be careful as it maybe discontinued stock.....I checked out a few 'good offers' from tesco's a while ago....albiet was Sony TV's, checked Sonys website for specs etc and found them all discontinued!

Hence why the likes of Tesco's, maybe other supermarkets can sell them apparently cheaper....

Yeah but i believe regardless of if its discontinued its still got a usable life expectancy.....the actual wording escapes me but basically even after a year or two it breaks down the manufacturer is still liable.

Defo wouldn't go for 32 , minimum 37", Ideal is 40" for a medium size room.

I also disagree with the comment out samsung being unreliable etc.

I love my M87, And my old man just bought a new Sony Bravia with better spec than mine and I still think the samsung looks better quality!

Thanks for the replies so far!

re 32 vs 37 or higher.... what is the picture like on a 37" or higher when displaying standard definition?  I would have thought it would pixelate?  I don't currently have an HD source, and the only option available to me at the moment is Sky HD, so I didn't want to be confronted with a 37" crap picture.

cheers

I would advise that a standard sky box with just scart might not be amazing but standard def on an Hd box with HDMI is spot on

You have Costco around the corner from you - worth poking your nose in. Remember they give 5yr warranties free (or is it 3yrs).  With my recent luck of TVs, the warranty is worthwhile.

As to reliability, I will decline commenting, other than saying I reckon they have actually fixed it now :o

I will go have a look, last time I looked they didn't have much by way of 1080p other than massive things.

Virtually everything 37" or higher is 1080p.  Some 32" are still 720p though.

As its only round the corner for you, have a look - you know there aren't the silly stunts you get in retail park electrical retailers to make one look better than other - find something you like, then nip back home and compare prices :)

And you can treat yourself to a hotdog and soda for £1.50. Apparently.

You will discover jack all by comparing screens in the shop.

They fiddle with the settings to make certain models stan out to icnrease sales on those with the better margins

I really rate Samsung, I ahve a 40, 32 and 19 inch LCD from them.

As for a full HD

For 40 inch - LE40A686 - £739
For 37 inch - LE37A686 - £630

They do have lesser models as well e.g.

For 40 inch - LE40A558 - £550
For 37 inch - LE37A558 - £540

The Sony's are not worth the premium they charge for them and they use the same panel as the Samsungs!

And forget Plasma!

All the Samsung sets online get excellent customer reviews. I presume these are genuine.
My older son has a Samsung 40" Plasma on his lounge wall and it looks and works great. No problems yet.
I'm about to buy a 32" Samsung LE32A457CID for £349.99 from a warehouse outlet, (The Big TV Shop), in Burscough, Lancs. The bloke seems to know his stuff.

Be aware that you can get cheaper......you can get that price form the high street sheds as I bought the same model a month ago for 340 from Currys (played them off against comet!)

Note that Richer Sounds have that model for 329.95 (if going to the store print out the web page).

Cheers all,  so I presume from the sizes you have Mark, that pixelation is not an issue on the bigger sizes, or are you running a proper HD source through it?
Title: Re: Best low price 1080p HD TV
Post by: Marks DTM Calib on 20 February 2009, 13:23:53
I run

Up-scaled DVD
Wii
Freeview

Pixelation is not an issue, its more down to the source!

Thanks for that, Mark. Richer Sounds looks great.
I tried to knock down both Curry's and Comet yesterday but they wouldn't budge an inch.  :'(

On my Samsung, I found my old bog standard (non upscaling) DVD player to be OK, but not brilliant.  This was connected via SCART, which is why I watch DVDs through MCE now (it is probably best upscaler you can get).

I guess as the source is SD, and the player can't upscale, its never going to be superb. Unless its the SCART connection that is limited?

 :-/

Saying all that, I'm very happy with the Samsung (have the same one as Mr DTM) - with the one fault I can pick with it is there is no 'quick' button to select PC input...

Well it work with my Panasonic DVD recorder.....

It allows you to select the source (easier) and it will then switch to it and allow limited remote capability to.

Other than Please read the manual, what do I do, just press the AnyNet button and see what happens?

Not holding out much hope - the only device plugged into my tv is the media center on PC input (for no sound - ie sound through seperate amp) and same media center on HDMI2 (with sound, for normal recorded TV playback)
