Title: The dreaded RUST.....
Post by: jerry on 21 February 2009, 16:21:32
Am I alone in finding that parts of my mig are increasingly attracting the dreaded rust? I bought my Sreg about a year ago and, at the time, apart from some very minor bits by wing mirrors, she looked very clean, with none noticeable on doors or arches. Obviously, some couldve been touched up for sale, but now have bits on bottom edges of both front doors, one on corner where bumper meets rear 1/4 panel by rear n/s wheelarch and several spots on 3 of 4 lower door panels (caused by stone chips?) plus the bits of bubbling by wing mirrors. At the moment there is still a fair bit of metal to rust ratio and (apart from bits by wing mirror) am getting others done next week at a cost of about £200. I know recent weather conditions havent helped esp with all the salt/grit on the roads, plus I live on the coast , but is this normal or am I just unlucky?? Love the car and am disappointed that dealing with rust will be an ongoing problem, esp as the jap import emina is 15 years old and has no rust at all (touch wood!)
                                                                                        jerry :(

PS-the car is cleaned and waxed regularly, but any advice to help prevent further problems would be appreciated :y

Tip: If you are getting th top edges of the doors done, get the bodyshop to grease in behint the top lip, I did this on the 2 of my omega's and the rust hasnt returned.

Another place I find that they like to rust is on the inside of the rear doors beside the door catch mechanism, I dont know if its because like you Im by the sea, I also had this treated succesfully.

cheers  :y

Cheers,
have thought about using some spray grease on some of the more "hidden" surfaces, but guess will have to apply fairly regularly.

My prized red Supermiggy is starting to have a bit of a problem with rust and I agree, it seems as if once it starts it is everywhere at once.

This must be an ongoing problem, along with the rear window. In 1986 I got my 1984 company Cavalier estate resprayed under warranty, mind did leave a bottle of whisky in the glove compartment for the bodyshop manager to find, which he did. :y

cheers Turk, will look into this-could it be used on top of the paintwork on the relevant areas once theyve been treated and resprayed do you think?

Why are we surprised, Vauxhall first learned this in the late 60 ::) ::) ::)

It lasts for ages in sheltered areas like engine bay, boot, inside the door frames and sills etc.

Unlikely to be needed on properly treated and re-sprayed areas.
No problem spraying up under the top lip of doors as mentioned by vauxfan2k.

Can we put this in to some form of perspective ::) Most of us are talking about 10 year old Migs with some bits of rust, our Gallant, same age is just beginning to go on rear wheelarches.
Seems to me that nowadays a 10 years old car can be found almost as good as new, not in the 60's what could you buy that was 10 years old and nearly as good as new, for a reasonable price.
I think times have moved on, cars from the 70's and early 80's just do not have the same relative shelf life as cars pre60 or post 90 imho ::)

Hi gents I would just like to add my agreement to the rust comments, I too live on the coast and it plays hell with the metalwork. Will have drivers door passenges O/S/R and bits around wheel arches to do if local s*** >:( stops trying to take away the remaining paint key scratch by key scratch there may be enough to salvage.
Unfortunately cars were not built to last WHAT IS ? :-[ :'(

no disagreement here. Of course cars from 70s/80s esp were pretty poor anti-corrosion wise compared with more recent models and it isnt entirely cynical thinking that it isnt in the manufacturers interest to make their cars last as long as they could have . Just saying that, in comparison to some similarly aged vehicles , Ive been a bit disappointed in levels of rust that are now appearing on the mig.Still, like the rest of us , will do my best to rectify the problem. :y
