Title: CHKDSK won't run properly.
Post by: shyboy on 05 March 2009, 09:45:39
I've tried to defrag. my hard disk, but analysing this aborts due to 'inconsitencies in the file system'. It tells me to run' CHKDSK' which I've done successfully many times before. This time I'm getting a warning that 'F' parameters are not present and it's running in 'read only' mode. It checks through the file system but then simply disappears.
Being a computer ignoramus, I don't know what this means. Can anyone help me by explaining how I can get 'CHKDSK' to complete please? I'm using Windows XP Home, by the way.
Cheers,
Bill.

How are you running chkdsk?  From a command line (a black box within Windows with a prompt like C:\> at the start of each line), or from your hard drive's properties window in which you click a "Check now..." button?

Hi Fellas,
Thanks for your responses.
I simply click 'start' and type 'CHKDISK' into the 'run' box which displays when I click the 'run...' item in the menu. It's always gone through the whole procedure until now.
I ran a 'malwarebytes anti-malware' quick scan which came up with 5 instances of Trojan-Vundo which were then quarantined. Then ran it again almost immediately and it came up with just one instance of the same definition in 'System 32'. I'm sorry this doesn't mean much to me, but I'm concerned because I use internet banking.
If an item is quarantined, I presume it won't show up on a new scan, so the single item must be new, from where I don't know.

Type 'chkdsk /f' in the window
the '/f' tells chkdsk to fix errors on the disk  :y

It would better to type 'cmd' in the 'run' box, this will open up a cmd window, where you can type 'chkdsk /f' . This will stop the window disapering once its completed so you can view the the results  :y

Tho doesnt sound good you have a virus and a rebuild maybe the best way to get rid if the AV software isnt getting rid for you

Try hanging your drive off another Machine, on Boot up Xp will probaly do a chkdsk for you, if not run chkdsk in dos or windows on the doner PC for your drive.

If you've got a virus which your AV isn't getting rid of then a re-install of Windows may be a good idea. Alternatively hand the machine over to a professional who may be able to chase down the virus and kill it completely.

Having said that, your problem with chkdsk may be that it can't get exclusive access to the drive because a lot of the files are locked because Windows is using them.  You might get on better with the following procedure:

use the /f parameter on command line, or Automatically Fix Errors in the GUI.

Either way, you should get an errro about unable to do as can't get exclusive use, and do at next reboot.

Panic over.
Thanks Cybertrucker! I followed your clear instructions and it sorted
everything out. A little bit more learned about these infernal machines.
As far as the Trojan-Vundo problem is concerned, I visited the MBAM Forum, (damn it! I've even started to use jargon,  ::)), and it seems the latest update had produced a 'false positive', reported by dozens of users. Not sure what that means precisely, but presumably it's a spurious identification of a problem. I'm assured that everything is now OK, and I'm currently running the latest updated version to check it's disappeared. Fingers crossed.

Glad to be of help!  :)  At least you've only got one computer to worry about - I'm responsible for over 200 of the wretched things on two sites five miles apart.  I knew I should have stayed a lorry driver...   ;)
