Title: sat nav
Post by: nick v6 on 06 March 2009, 18:56:57
ive got my sat nav for the mig today
and got it wired up with a little help from tb

nice one tb

got it all working was now just a case of installing it

ive installed the screen and ran the wire for the control stick
ive changed the speaker as me and tb found the speaker was knackered (and he was not even here)

all the wire's are put in the right place ive fitted the gps receiver

so nearly all done

ive ran out of light now so will put the all the trim back in place first thing in the morning and it will all be sorted

then it will be just a case of putting a route in and trying it out :y

carin cant do postcodes!

only does Road Junctions and limited door numbers :y

If you have a later UK / IRL disc it'll likely do 5 digit post codes....  If you have a European disc, it'll likely not.... that seems to be the general idea I've found..  :y

Sad I know, but, I use my Carin and a Navman at the same time, it's a pi55er listening to them argue...

Right.

Carin Postcodes. It can't.  If you have the later firmware, it can do 5 digit postcodes (ie select general area rather than street) - which like the pre V4 tomtoms, as much use as a used johnny.

Other thing with carin, is the gps is secondary, its primary fix is via speed pulses.  So you need to tell it where it is (CAR LOCATION in setup menu).  If you haven't wired up the speed pulse signal, it will never move.

if its showing not sats visible after about 10mins, either you need to reposition gps receiver, or its knackered (they are delicate).  fortunately, £6 from egay should you need a new one.

TB, what syatem would you recommend for the sat nav? Carin or Siemens? Which is easier to install? I ask this as I am thinking about installing one in my car and just wondered if the seimens one would be more or less plug and play?

in a nutshell, the siemens is the better system.  Not quite plug and play, and a damn sight more expensive than the carin.

carin is vertually plug and play, just some awkward connections to make in passenger kick panel unless you have a late 1998 or 1999 car.

I'm saying siemens is better based on the fact it uses the MID (carin is quite low by radio), and its much, much faster.  if you have a colour screen, the siemens can show basic maps as well, and intersection pop-ups, though it can be slow to draw at times.

either would fit 1997 P car.

for carin, you'd need to move TC switch, and also do that awkward wiring in passenger kick panel.

for siemens, security coding aside (thats a whole other heap of trouble you can get in to with siemens), all the dash based wiring mods can be done on a trafficmaster loom, except a jumper wire on back of new display. A bit of tweaking around the wiring on the replacement cd changer, and then find a way to mount the new cd changer.

Try this BIN

260374589370

I have used 2 of these successfully with my 2 CARiNs.  The lead is only 2m, so needs to be mounted close to CD unit - mine is just about the metal parcel shelf, but under carpet bit

Any one else needing a carin satnav receiver, the one above is the one to go for, and at £6 + £2.5 P&P, about the cheapest going.
