If the regional depots around here (and not just my 'local' depot) are anything to go by, they rather well deserved it. For me at home, they have a 12% success rate on delivering on the promised day. At work (different depot) they have a 0% success rate on delivering on the promised day. And they lie.

There are a few of our machines with negative takeout times.
Usually bigger stuff than contact lenses, but going to commission one that handle hyperdermic needles tomorrow..

Yep, I worked in the City until 1988. Not as a trader, but in management within the derivatives exchanges. The City was good in those days. I got out when I saw the way it was going. :y

I know what you mean. I was there when "my word is my bond" really meant something. It changed with electronic trading, IMHO.

Actually, truer than you can imagine. A few of my old trader friends there have had major medical operations for the ticker and, regrettably, others are pushing up the grass. :o
It was good fun, though. Especially when I visited the US exchange where "Trading Places" (Eddie Murphy) was filmed. :y

LOL, that can get expensive... For the robot hand or end effector if you are lucky... Have you ever pushed a machine over? Only the question came up at our place the other day. I thought it was a stupid question really - our machines are 80t capacity and weight 5 tonnes.
If you are doing hypodermic syringes, I am guessing Swindon or Plymouth. Wherever, enjoy putting on and taking off the cleanroom garb...

Somehow ended up as accounts/admin manager for the company I've worked for for 31 years!! :-? Started out as a field service engineer and progressed to technical operations manager. Got fed up with being on the road all the time (most of the time sat in jams on the M25) so moved into the office to run purchasing and stock control. Became a bit of an expert with the company's computer system and started getting involved with accounts. When the previous accounts/admin manager left, they offered the position to me and so here I am. The irony of it is that I always hated maths at school and hated anything to do with accounts!! Funny old world ain't it. ::)

OK ill kick off...... IM a regional Transport Planner....
I am involved in the Supply-Chain management for a large logistics company , co-ordinating the distribution of our clients distribution needs nationally and throughout the United Kingdom. I am also involved in the consultation of supply-chain solutions and implementation of Transport Management Systems.
Oh and an Omega nut........ according to my wife (Bev)
ALL traffic planners should spend one day a month riding shotgun with a driver just to remind them how long runs actually take allowing for weight, width restrictions & low bridges, tipping times, tachograph breaks, you should'nt have promised the customer before checking with the driver. One more thing, try to distinguish between invoice & delivery addresses. Lost count of the times i've been sent to an office in an artic when i should be at the warehouse, usually miles away & get looked at with ridicule, phone in & get moaned at for being late!!! No wonder there's a shortage of HGV drivers.
Not saying you do that yourself mate but you can't deny many planners do...I'll stick to themonuclear physics & a little architecture from no own!!!!! ::) :y

Funnily enough i did just that, as an ex hgv driver myself i can see it from both sides, i worked with blokes a few years back who had no idea about the size, width, speed of an hgv and only saw it was 2 inches on the map and a lorry could get there just as quick as a Car. Laugh, i just give up with people like that....... your right though most planners i have worked with are useless and half have no knowledge of Driver hours, regs etc etc.....

Reminds me of my Traffic Manager at the last place I worked on the HGV's. Only transport work he'd ever done was a fortnight's motorcycle couriering! Tells me I can get a 21 ton load from Worcester to Peterlee in 2 and a half hours! Traffic manager my ar5e! He couldn't manage traffic in a closed car park!!!!

Got a lot of time for them - had ancestors on mums side working on Brixham trawlers (including early motor ones) and pleasure vessels between the wars (how her dad met her mum when moored up).
Dads side had a ex Navy and later Coastguard - few details as he was old when dad was young - dads dad was last and dad was one of the last.
Quite a few on my ancestors worked on the sea, some others were gardeners!

None of the above...G-MAT. If the product can stand it, our robots can pull 12g...before i started, they managed to make IMM's fault because they were being told to close before they'd finished opening..
There are a few of our machines with negative takeout times.
Usually bigger stuff than contact lenses, but going to commission one that handle hyperdermic needles tomorrow..
Our take out robots have carbon fibre arms so no pushing..just splinters when maintenance techs short out our safety systems!
We just crashed the press' program - fault was "Consent to close received before mould open - check signals"!!!! ;D ;D
Neither - Woodstock. We've got a machine to go to Swindon shortly though...

I work in IT support for a College. Bit of a change from my previous employment, I used to be a lorry driver (hence the name 'Cybertrucker').

I never blame the oil companies for the high price of petrol/diesel. They have to find it, drill it out, transport it, refine it, and deliver it to a Morrison's near you. Then along comes the government and says "We'll have a slice of that action" and puts duty on. And then puts VAT on the top, so you're paying tax on tax. This is why around 75% of the cost of fuel is tax and goes to the govt. If you want to see what fuel really costs see what the Yanks are paying for it, or see what you can buy red diesel for. The difference doesn't go to nasty profiteering oil companies, as some would have us believe, it goes to the collection of charlatans and con-men that passes for our government.

i dont think BT will be around in the next 25 years the management are destroying the company!
21CN is a complete failiure apart from the ADSL side i think they should just give up!
unfortunatly the company is run by accountants not engineers a bad way to be imho
Im applying to work for the MOD Nr Chelt have passed both interviews just waiting for the drug testing

I think the current management are as bad as the bad old days of Vallance and Bonfield, lacking direction and ideas, and throw money at problems in the hope they'll go away.
Whether or not 21CN will ever work properly, they have to do it, as most of the digital exchanges are at the end of their original planned service life, and 21CN is a low cost way of replacing them on the back of the expensive trunk network overhaul.
-
Lol, ow how ill informed we are on 21CN.
Its not the cheapest option by any means, IP backhaul still has a high Capex and Opex compared to the older (and already there) TDM systems. Its also not as reliable to!). THye could eaily install mapper cards in the current setup at low cost to take the IP based traffic from newer soft swicth based exchange setups!
21CN is a dogs arse of a setup as there are to many vendors supplying the kit and some of the kit was not mature when selected!
I on the other hand dont mind, whilst 21CN is falling over, BT are buying loads of OMS1600 to keep shoring the TDM setup up which is my baby (or was, I am now running development of the next gen layer 2/3 kit)

They are looking at medium term reductions - at lot of the kit is getting way past its sell-by date, and because of the mis-mash of bits bolted on, a sod to support, invariably involving lots of different teams to resolve relatively simplistic issues (Not that 21CN will solve that last issue from what I've seen of it so far :-X).
When the decision was made, they obviously believed that IP would become the cheaper transit technology, and have an added benefit of being about to reduce capital expenditure renewing the tired old X and Y exchanges (an early plan was to basically stick a Cisco badged HP DL380 in each exchange to do the work of the switching part of the exchange, just leaving simplistic analogue to VoIP linecards).
The reality seems to be, from someone now sitting on the periphery, that in true Civil Service style, its become a bloody mess, as they always insist on multiple vendors. And with it being immature technology, interworking between the vendors equipment seems to had introduced other problems.
It can work, in fact it does work reasonably well. It work probably have worked better and easier had it been managed better earlier on.
They decided an entire IP transport was the way to go, allowing a single transit network. Were they jumping on a bandwagon? Yes, probably. Though remember, BT have massive amounts of (different) VoIP, and it would appear that cost is very beneficial.
-
Agreed but, IP backhaul, its not needed and given the size and modern state of the TDM setup they have was some what crazy.
I can see the logic for upgrading the voice etc and converging on a single backhaul network (to get rid of the seperate PDH, SDH and Ethernet setups)
Thing is, you can load up PDH, Packet, SDH the lot onto what they already have.....so why re-invent the wheel!
Ethernet will never have a lower opex than a TDM setup because it uses MUCH more power and hence the electric bills and cooling plant costs are always going to be higher.
It also has piss poor standards bodies resulting in a lot of ambiguity in the interworking hence the probelms they are seeing!
Ethernet backhaul is also NOT mature, its a long way from being so and BT cant even decide which standard to back (it was T-MPLS, then they went down the PBB/MACinMAC route and are now considering MPLS-TP which as a standard is a good 18 months from full maturity).

I think a lot of the decisions were made on the fact they thought a lot of the existing kit would be at the end of its service life, so reusing old kit never needed to be factored it. Also, when the decisions to go entirely IP were made in the 90s, I suspect they thought that would be cheapest, as everyone then (even now!) thought IP over ethernet transit was the only future. Trouble is, as you say, its too immature for inter-vendor operability.
As an aside, would the silicon improvements in power consumption bring the new stuff in line, from a power view, with the older transit stuff?
-
Nope.
On any ethernet or IP based setup you need processors, big bloody processors and loads of packet RAM.
Every packet (even 64 byte ones!) gets inspected and the headers etc looked at before passing to a que (i.e. VERY fast RAM).
So, it requries loads of functions for each transaction....which uses loads of power.
And remember, reductions in geometry for any chip will , in theory, reduce the power consumption but.....its reduces it for TDM as well as packet!
As an example, an OMS1600 with a 80G TDM switch, 4 10G line interfaces, full control set and a large raft of trib cards will be about 600W.
An smaller market leading packet device with an 80G switch and less than half the number of trib ports consumes 600W and only has 2 10G line ports!
The later is (from a release persepective) 3 weeks old and the former is 5 years old!

I was thinking more in terms of the (now) old stuff BT use against modern packet switched.
Saying that, I'm often in datacentres with my back to large routers (eg Cisco 12000), and the fans alone must pull a few hundred watts ;D, I dread to think what the core processing boards are pulling :o
