What are the pros and cons of having one fitted . I am not into gardening and I can wash the car at work so my water consumption is not great .
Reason for asking is I was asked by my next door neighbour to show her where her meter was so she could check the reading.
Her bill was £138 mine is £253 . The houses are the same 1 bed and we both live on our own so water usage is not great and should be similar .
Any comments please :y

i have a meter here, old house (much smaller) didn't. My bills are much cheaper here, but I was in a different water region before (Thames)
-
For most folks the bill will drop .... if you have 5 kids and bath em everynight you'll probably be better off on water rates.
With a meter you pay for what you use... with rates you pay depending on your council tax house band.
I went to a meter years ago .. no regrets at all.

Mine is £316.02 :( :o though that includes sewerage, just got the bill today :'(
That's water rates, best not get a meter till the kids have moved out, how long does it take to have a shower :D ::)
-
We're seriously considering a meter now all but one of the kids have moved on.

Not quite -- you pay according to whatever the rateable value was in 1993 --- or what the water company think it should have been.
When two houses are merged, for instance, they might only go up one council tax band -- but the water rates will double, as the water board simply add together the old rates >:(
-
No just me and the cat :'(
It really does sound a lot cheaper I will have to give them a ring and see whats involved in changing over :y

I'm considering this also, and got info. from my providers website to estimate possible savings. Even over-estimating my usage, it seemed to indicate a worthwhile saving. I also have a neighbour who lives on her own and has saved a substantial amount by going for a meter.
Don't forget that you can only change your mind up to 12 months from installation, and anyone buying your property in the future has no option but to retain the meter.
I also worry whether the provider is free to increase the rate of charge outside the normal set rates in the future when you are stuck with and can't discontinue the meter.
-
Once you have a meter though -- you and those after you are stuck with it
edit: must type faster. I imagine, much like power, the providers can increase rates as they see fit
-
5 of us and it is cheap
TBH the rates should be high to encourage water meter usage and pay for what you use

Depends who you take it with, I suppose.

From the very few people I know with water meters Im covinced that for as long as the kids are still at home and the washing machine and bathroom continue to see their current use then Im bloody glad Im not on one!! ;D
-
Had a meter fitted 12 years ago, halfed the bill instantly.
Moving in about a months time, the water meter was the 1st upgrade on the list and is allready fitted. :y :y
-
My only problem is I rent the house and the landlord did not seem to keen on having a meter fitted , so that may prevent me having it fitted :-/
-
No idea of the costs... ::) but we're still on rateable value etc for our water. It's only time till they convince every household to get a meter and then the price per gallon/tonne/meter3 will go up. :-? :-?
I've no plans to move yet, but whther a house had a meter or nor would certainly influence my choice.

They are fitted on the outside stop cock where ever possible, so not actually within the building, why tell him.

Cos it's not his house :-?...... it belongs to the landlord, & he might not want one fitted.

I'm pondering over a meter as well.
Only issue I have is a deep side jaquzzi but it takes almost half an hour to fill, so I usually have a shower. £800 for a tub I've used about 10 times in 2 years :-?
-
He is an odd little man like that maybe I should just get him to pay what I would save in having it fitted that would soon change his mind ;D

Water supply does not belong to the land lord, unless he pays the bill then its up to the tennent on how he chooses to pay utility bills.
Whats the difference from a water meter to a gas or electric meter.
-
What happens to the price when everyone has meter
Same a gas and elec --- no water price up ? slow to come down !!
Flood price up !!!! - cost of cleanup etc etc
Water co's got to make a proift same as gas & electric.

What the hell i just checked our bills and we pay £46.20 a month on rates thats £554.40 a year for a 3 bed Band C house WTF???? :o :o :o
-
We applied to have one fitted about a year ago, because it's only me and wife, but they couldn't fit it cause the stopcock was too close to the kerb and it would mean digging up the pavement. So the water board estimated what we would use and that's now what we pay, less than half what we were last year.Very happy ;D

They are making a bigger proffit from me if I dont have a meter.
But meter or not. Water rates ot meter usage would still get charged the same. If one goes up 5% then so will the other.

No idea legally ......
I was refering to the house being owned by the landlord - not the water supply
water meter vs gas/electric? If you have a card meter put in, it's possible to go back to a 'proper' meter, when a water meter is put in, you can't go back.
My Uncle's meter is after the stop cock in the house.
-
Hmm, its different in Bradford. My daughter's place has a meter in the pavement, but its not used, the bill is fixed. I think there was something legal that prevented them from forcing you to have a meter, so some companies are a bit softer. Mind you the profit they are making is generally huge. I always thought it unfair about being charged for drainage, when that gives them the water they sell back to us.

My water bill used to be in excess of £600 pa! Now on a water meter, same house, not changed usage habits, my bill is around £250 pa.
