not sure mate
i had a garman a few years ago and i struggled to get it updated
as for it not charging could be a battery problem

the cheap end of the portables are pretty much disposable. Here, TomTom do seem to win, though even their cheap end stuff is really disposable - generally cheaper to buy new unit than the map updates.

garin sat navs aint cheap cost me over £250.If i plug the incar chager in it charges and is all fine but if i charge it in doors then it comes up withthe sat nav plugged into the pc tower

You need to connect the window mount to the back of the Sat-nav then plug in the USB cable via that connection to be able to charge via PC.
I don't reckon it's worth paying £60 (last time I looked) to update the Garmin unit I have, even though I paid £200 over two year's ago for my Nuvi 310
Halfords were selling the Tom Tom one for less than £90 last Xmas, with the latest mapping.
Mine has 2007 maps, so will probably buy a new one next year.
Like has been said they are cheap enough to buy a new one now instead of updating, no way around it on the Garmin as I know of.

That's the lead causing that. They sense some of the pins on the plug to work out whether its connected to a PC or not. Something like the 5th pin is not used for communication, the other end only has 4 pins, so they connect it to ground or 5V so the Garmin can tell its a charger, if no signal, then its a normal USB lead and hence must be connected to a PC. I had this with mine, the *&$@ thing would keep switching to this when I was trying to navigate somewhere, not fun ;D
Time to buy a new charger :'(

It may have cost you that amount, but how much is the equivilent current model - they have come down hugely in price. I must of paid over £400 for my first.
So my comment about probably not worth updating was not a slag-off of the unit, but more a comment about it may not cost a huge amount more than a repair, and have the advantage of newer maps and a newer unit...

Just thinking, that's what we have, the nuvi 200. Its not that old and still works well so doesn't need updating really.
The charging thing, well ................. do you have to charge it at home much ?. We never do, the only charging ours gets is when its plugged into the car, and thats enough. If you want to charge yours more then go for a drive with it plugged into the car.
It shouldn't need more charging, if so the batteries are starting to go down, but this shouldn't matter the batteries are only for running the unit when the car is stopped, so they don't need to be fully charged.
If it still works, don't worry about it, wait until it breaks :y
