The government's top medical adviser has drawn up plans for a minimum price for alcohol which would double the cost of some drinks in England.
Under the proposal from Sir Liam Donaldson, it has been reported that no drinks could be sold for less than 50 pence per unit of alcohol they contain.

That will do nicely, thank you :y

tesco beer is cheap ;) and the pound is near enough matching the euro so booze cruises aren't needed.
but sticking this tax on is gonna bring the booze cruise tips back in fashion ::)
do you get the impression that somewhere along the line our taxes may be invested somewhere in europe :-?
-
Two things i love, my chocolate & my lager. I have one chocolate bar & no more than two cans a day. If i can control what i have then why can't others?
Why should i pay more for my pleasure for the sake of others. The majority being penalized for the minority.
I say tax the fat pigs & give them the bill for their NHS stay in hospital, it's THEIR FAULT & certainly NOT MINE.
The government's short of cash because of their own stupid miss management & they need to bring in some more funds.
All i have to do is find a recipe for chocolate, because i make my own beer, then they can all break off.

Brew my own bitters aswell pete, can manage without the choc though. ciggies are my downfall, need to get some baccy plants. :y

if they kept the drugs at there own houses instead of dumping them on other peoples property it wouldn't bother me
we keep ourselves to ourselves and don't ask for any trouble
the only trouble we get is like i said the druggies

This is simply a part of the current control freak nanny state.
Write to your mps, especially if they are government and risky seat.
-
Quite right! Booze should be banned. And fags. And big, gas guzzling cars.
Then the government would go bust altogether. ;)

I'am very much against this draconian measure.
If the price of booze is to double in price overnight..............who has all the extra profit..............does anyone know?...........Would it be the Supermarkets.......or the alcohol manufacturers..........or would it all be paid direct to the government in the form of more taxation. :-/ :-/ :y

..and they want to make sure we eat according to their wishes, too...

more pubs closing
supermarkets selling less which cuts production at brewery
more tax thought to go into tax system but probably less due to less being sold
result is loads of booze cruises and loads more jobs available in customs and excise
-
biggest loser is working class
the wealthy spend lots of money on fancy IMPORTRED wines anyway
-
its not a health thing its a double bubble for the government. firstly theres more tax to be had on higher costing booze coz people will still find the money and secondly if you cannot drink quite as much then you may be less reliable on the nhs. no lose situation.
me, im not a smoker and only drink once in a blue moon so it aint gonna affect me too much but the regulars wont be staying in the pub that long................. :(

Our area is nice apart from Friday evenings when there are often gangs of youths walking about making loads of noise and carrying alcohol. They are way, way under age for drinking (15/16 years if that). Rest of the week is nice and peaceful. ::)
-
They brought in 24 hour opening for pubs and said this would greatly reduce the binge culture,it was actually more likely that it was a thankyou to big brewers for donations. ::)
Now they appear to be suddenly speeding off in almost the opposite direction, more of the promised "joined up government"?
TBH,something needs to be done in our society to stop youngsters in particular drinking themselves almost senseless and then in quite a few cases, beating and kicking each other completely senseless.
I very much doubt that putting the price of booze up is the answer though, imo the problems run much too deep to have a solution as simple as this.

Make the legal age for alcohol consumption 21, perhaps?

Not sure about consumption but I think raising the age for off sales to 21 may have some merit.
-
Enforcement might be the problem, there are plenty of 13/14 year olds drinking at the moment. :-/

I fully agree, and I do not know what the answer is. When I was a lad ::) ::) ::) the pub's shut at 10.30, yes we used to get peed up sometimes, but nothing like you see on these police programmes, it was not the norm to be mortal, just to enjoy a drink with your mates, maybe back to someones house, on a Saturday, and then home.
I have no idea where all this town center trouble has come from other than the pubs are open too long and young people don't know when to stop, and as for the girls, well :-X
Underage drinking seems to be at a high, but never has there been so many shops selling alcohol, perhaps an age restriction of 25 to buy from shops, not pubs, may help and harder dealings with those that sell to underage or buy on there behalf. Simplistic I know but I can offer no other suggestions to the problem.....

Yes, but that wouldn't fix the problem outside clubs, where chavs have been swilling for hours.
Albitz makes a good point, though. The problem may be deeper. Why does our youth feel that getting pi**ed is the only way to spend a night out? In my younger days, "pulling" was infinitely more important (and fun), than getting canned.
-
I think self respect could have something to do with it.young girls waking up on a Sunday morning not remembering if they had sex the previous night,or who they had it with.young lads in a similar position,or having had or given someone else real kicking,no concept of values/decency etc;?
-
Stop the local 'corner shops' from selling the stuff.
Make the supermarkets cordon off the alcohol dept. to ensure under aged dont get at it.
Go into any local mini-mart and more than 50% of the floorspace is taken up with alcohol.
Massive (MASSIVE) fines for shop owners selling to under 18's.
Stop the local Authorities from granting booze licenses like they were trying to save the Planet! Go into any city centre and its crammed with clubs-and too many apprentice alco,s.
Too late now,the man has made his mind up :-/
Buggers!

Public shaming for the yob element
How come there was no problems when we were young
-

We should be enforcing the laws we have. We have laws against being drunk and disorderly, underage drinking and the sale of alcohol to minors. Chuck them in the cells for the night and they'll think twice next friday night.
Problem is, that requires an adequately resourced Police force, and that costs money. Instead they penalise those who do nothing wrong in order to "be seen" to do something and, far from it costing anything, they make more tax revenue in the process. Just like the continual march of the Gatso while people are STILL driving round with phones clamped to their ears due to zero chance of the law being enforced.

I had a greater success rate with one than the other though. :-[
We are now a society where there are no consequences, though. Parents don't want to know about their own kids. As long as they are out of the house they couldn't care less what they were up to. I know for a fact I wouldn't have got away with getting hammered and causing a nuisance every night when I was young. Discipline was waiting when I got home, but of course we're not allowed that any more. :-X
There's no quick fix for this. It has been brewing for a generation and we are starting to see the results. It could take decades to change, and who knows what will happen when we see the results of today's troublemakers' parenting skills? :-/
I fear these measures will just mean more sacrifices get made in hard up households where a lot of alcohol is consumed, and more trade will leave the pubs in favour of the booze cruise. Then again, closure of pubs seems to be an unwritten Labour manifesto pledge these days.

Of course, would it not be logical to assume that if the price was hiked then those who could not readily afford the extra would seek additional income...
...by mugging, thieving, fencing etc. :(
