Title: ann's honda civic query?
Post by: nick v6 on 09 March 2009, 19:04:40
well we have got ann's honda civic
thanks to bertie for taking me to pick it up
top bloke

the car is great runs fine and goes like hell

sometimes the engine managment light comes on and i have noticed that the engine revs drop really low
if you turn the engine off and wait for a min and start it back up its fine for ages

anything that you can think of
ive noticed its had a new lamba sensor which was my first thought

i'm thinking of the sensor that controls the idle from choke on to choke off i'm thinking it maybe that
stepper motor or somthing like that its called

its an r reg 1997 1.6 honda civic 2 door coupe

nice 1 :y
it got to be some sort of air/fuel flow sensor
or something to do with the auto choke

when its warm the revs go really low close to cutting out
but it don't do it all the time
when it does do it it can be a pain to start

Well its probably a D8 or D9 era engine.

So 16V EFi without VTEC.....and certainly no choke!

It could be one of about 6 different engines!

Al very revvy with little low down torque which is acceptable in something as light as a Civic (about 1200Kg). Not to hot on the safety as a result though.

Basically its a Hondaised Rover 400

is there a way of finding out what engine it is

Hiya,

Sounds like the idle control valve to me. He should have a service connector in the passenger foot well. Stick a paperclip in it and it'll flash the engine light. It'll be like say, 3 long flashes and 3 short flashes is code 33. Google honda ecu codes and it'll tell you whats wrong. The idle control valve has a code of its own so you'll know if its that. If it is that, a bit of carb cleaner will possibly fix it. Otherwise, you'll have to find another civic coupe with one. One off another honda civic wont go, unless its a d16y7 engine too, which is unlikely as I think only the civic coupe got the d16y7.

btw he says you have the D16Y7 so its a D Series lump

thats what my mate has said seems like the miggys paper trick works

i'm starting to think the exhaust is blocked
it don't sound very good at the back of the car when its reved
might try changing the exhaust first and see what happens and take it from there
it needs a new exhaust so can't go wrong really

ive taken the idle control vale off the civic
and what a wierd design

it has a water feed that runs in to and out of the valve

and ive had a look and it is black as anything
and where it bolts on to the carb all inside there is gacked up with crap

so it looks like the problem is there
i will be getting some carb clean tomorrow and giving it a good cleaning and then try again and see how that gets on
but for how gacked up it was i'd say when its cleaned out it will run perfect :y

i hope :-/

well cleaned all the carb out and there was aload of crap in there
even dropped the starter off as it sticks sometimes
and put it all back together and let it run for about half hour and it seems to be running better than before

so it looks like i found the problem
the idle control valve

which is the first one i have ever seen controlled by the water temp
there is a water feed in to it and out of it to control the choke
strange but cute

well you learn something new every day :y

Lol, I would swat up on your theory!

a) It does not have a Carb, it has a throttle body
b) It does not have a choke

What you have probably seen is a coolant heating feed to stop the idle valve freezing.
