Title: Humber Hawk

I have just been taking a trip down memory lane by thinking of one of the cars I learnt to drive in, a 1950s Humber Hawk.

One of these was owned by my future father in law and he very bravely allowed me to drive it to Hastings from London, and back.  A lovely car, but without power steering (!!) and most gear changing was accomplished by double declutching.

Oh what fun and what memories!! :D :D :D ;)  Especially when I remember on the return leg of the journey, in Bromley, whilst I was driving, a rocker on No. 3 cylinder decided to snap!! :o :o :o

End of a lovely car, as my father in law never repaired his old cars bought for £50, he just purchased another one; an Austin Westminster this time round! :D ;)

Drove a Humber Imperial once, 3 speed auto with a broken kick down cable, was interesting to say the least ::)

The later Humber Sceptre was just a rebadged Hillman Hunter ......with a splash of added wood and leather.........not a real Humber at all. :-/ :-/ :y :y :y

My first car was a 1958 "Sit up and bef" Ford Popular E93A side valve.

I mod'd engine (high compression gas flowed head) + twin SUs, uprated 2nd gear + remote shift (only 3 forward speeds!), ran it on 15" zodiac wheels instead of skinny 17" ones, LMB suspension + anti roll bars.  Then rallied it!!!  Instead of 65mph flat out I could hit 70mph in 2nd and run on to just below the ton!!

My grandfather had one of those as his company car  8-) 8-) 8-) and a good freind of mine rebuilt a Snipe took him over 2 years to do it . Must admit its a loverly  piece of machinary  :y :y straight 6 3.0l ,column change and a big front bench seat, imagine the fun you could have in one off those ;) ;) No reminising from the over  55's please ::) ::) ::)

There was a Super Snipe parked up on a nearby drive years ago. My kids (5 or 6) loved the look of the car & the name. The last I saw of it was on the end of a tow-pole ......  :'(

I saw Humber hawk and thought it was a film or something....but I think thta was Hudson Hawk.

I guess most Humber Hawks has been recycled (more than once) by the time I reached this planet!

I always fancied a Humber sceptre ( the Mk 1 Minx shape) with all the chrome clocks, as a project car. Maybe one day.

I had a 1965 one when I was about 19, it was all those clocks that sold it to me. ;D ;D had overdrive, I discovered that if you red lined it in 4th plus overdrive that it would blow the main bearings ::) ::) ::) an easy fix though.... :y

I'm sure we had one when I was around 5 or 6 years old, so that would make it about 1969/70.

did Humber actually make it themselves? It wasn't uncommon in the 60's for major maunfacturers to farm out estates to 3rd parties. Ford used farnham and .... erm ....erm .... can't remember. MK III & IV Zephyr/Zodiacs were done by them, and I've only ever seen one of each of them, they were both HUGE cars.

did Humber actually make it themselves? It wasn't uncommon in the 60's for major maunfacturers to farm out estates to 3rd parties. Form used farnham and .... erm ....erm .... can't remember. MK III & IV Zephyr/Zodiacs were done by them, and I've only ever seen one of each of them, they were both HUGE cars.

Think it was the same company that did the hearse conversions of the day...

Like yourself, cant remember the firms name for the life of me!   ;D

That was my thoughts, same with the Rover P6 and I have seen a Rover P5 estate at Enfield pageant of Motoring some years ago.

A lot of conversions these days are done by Coleman Milne or Wilcox (might be one & the same now :-/) & Woodall Nicholson ... bloody expensive conversions too. One of the Merc Hearses my dad drives was around £90k!!! and I think the 6 door 'limos' aren't much different.  :o

Yup.  remembered immediately after posting....

Some bonny cars in there.  Just not looking forward to a wee hurl in one....   :)

I've been in loads of 'em, even taken to school in a DS420 limo (the last British car to have Limousine as a body style on the log book - as opposed to stetched saloon) as a spotty 15 yrs old kid!  :y  :y

Yes, very long bonnet and short boot...
Executive came as standard with leather seats, wood grain dash with loads of gauges, sunroof, and autobox...
Very comfortable with seats like armchairs, but performance not too good - that was a heavy car even for the 3.0L V6 engine...

All I know is I seem to remember a 1950s style Humber Hawk, of the type I pictured at the start of this thread, in Estate form, but in 'countryman' style with wood trim, if I remember correctly, sometime in the late fifties.  Never noticed them again in the 60s. ::) ::) ::)
