Modern Linux distros come with a GUI, so work the same as windows to all intent and purpose, they just "look" different, and take some getting used to .. much the same as Vista is different from Windows 98 in how you use it.

The main hiccup with linux distros is often the availability of drivers for peripherals (printers/scanners/cameras etc etc) ... there are plenty of software programms to 90% of most peoples "normal" work .. word processing, databases, spreadsheets etc etc.

Ubuntu is free and quite good ... Redhat is, AFAIK, no longer free, and there are numerous other distros out there ... google is your friend .. :)

i made the switch to OSX at home, never looked back.

I orginally bought my mac mini for uni use, as my work had to be mac compatible. Its the best machine i ever bought for windows!!! Very stable.

I had it duel boot for ages, decided to make it 100% mac after my other windows machine died.

Its nice to use mac after windows all day at work!

finally got round to playing with linuxs yellow dog 6 on ps3 last weekend. First impression, shite frankly, but i aint knowledgable enough to say if there is a good reason for it being shite, like not used to it,  its early days to be fair.

Agreed ^^^^^ - if you want to stick with Gates mob use XP SP3 or wait for Windows 7 (this is new o/s - what Vista should have been) to come out.  Win7 is in beta and you could download it off microsoft site (not sure if you still can though) to try it out.

Its shyte because the PS3 only lets one SPE do the work instead of letting all 7 SPE's  this very problem is why GT5 is taking far too long to release sony's boffins are having trouble with programing the "CELL"

I Use UBUNTU 64 now and again cant notice any difference in performance over 32bit vista ununtu seems to have good driver support it even works with the 3 Dongle modem

I would suggest Mint or PCLinuxOS. Install either, the default install is pretty usable as is,internet,email,mp3 player etc. Use as is for a few weeks to get the feel, join the respective Forums to glean some info.
Dont get too involved in using the CLi or 'shell'. There is software included (Synaptic) to update your installed stuff and to add more as you need it.

I've been at it for about 5 years and I love it. No virus' or crap like that to worry about--although a lot of this stuff comes from visiting dodgy web sites. Stuff in emails is 99.9% targeted at winders users anyway.
