Title: taking advantage of the recession
Post by: Richie London on 26 March 2009, 15:03:33
i was offered a job earlier doing a pub refurbishment in fleet, at nearly 600 a week less than i was getting in september.and with the 80 miles a day travelling i wouldnt have nothing left after tax.  i wont say what my reply was to them but it was not very pleasant.  they probably won the tender last yr for the job so will not of had to lower there price for the work to be done, but expect you to though

Trouble is that unlike 12 months ago, you are now not in an over subscribed skill set.

Hence they will pay the minimum they can (as I and any buisness man would!).

Somebody will do the work as its money coming in which is better than no income for those with dependents.

I think its great, many sections of the building trade have been been demanding over inflated prices for many years due to a skills shortage and what is happening now is a correction (although its under correcting at the moment which is pretty normal in reality).

This is actulay something I haev been predicting for some time

Fair play too you...if you have the skills too attract that sort of money then why not.

Im sure the computer bods would earn good money due too there skills.

Regards the recession and trades i was hoping they would become a little more affordable, well they sure aint round my way. :(

Plumber quoted £450 for a days work...take out a sink toilet and bath and refit....and thats with me supplying and getting rid of old suite. :o

marks right that the industry is dead now but i wont refuse work if i can manage on the money, if its in london its ok i can get a btravelcar butdoing about 600 miles a week in petrol and after tax and paying the x wont be any good. in 3 yrs the kids will all have left school so i will get out of the trade and do driving, maybe take my hgv or drive 7.5 tonners or something. for now i just have to take what i can afford.

I should add that on the plumbing, consider doing it yourself as plumbing is pretty easy to do!

Well we need new bath taps....but because its too much hassle for the guy too take the panel off and spend a little time taking them off and replacing he has recommended us for a new suite.

Waiting time is up too 1 year.....bath takes 45 mins too fill. >:(

So decided i"ll buy a suite and pay someone too fit it.

Don't believe it - unless you have a very special skillset thats currently in demand (and not many are), the rates are in freefall.  Most 'standard' run-of-the-mill IT contractors have gone from their £30/40ph to around McDonalds wages. Those who have a contract that is.

Trouble we find is something gets lost in the translation from English to Hindi when the requirements/specs are agreed with the software company  >:(

Still, the bean counters can't see that, and don't care it takes 3 times as long to deploy anything....

LOL, the companies we deal with over there seem to be variable - some really good, some, language a real barrier.   I can't complain as I can't speak a word of any dialect of any Indian language (or Cov language come to that ;D).

But if there is one phrase that gets my hackles up....

"Do the needful"  >:(  >:(  >:(

Ah yes, the face to face shaking of head whilst saying yes.  Always confusing that one when you ask them a yes/no answer ;D

The guys in the office (we tend to drag them over to UK if its an important deployment) always tend to be better - I guess a case of using language all day every day, and learning our oddities...

In some environments, that is irrelevent!
