Title: Computer advice needed.
Post by: stuart30 on 29 March 2009, 20:49:18
Ive just been given a Compaq Evo PC....yes i know there crap. ;D

Just loading XP pro on it now and im wondering if its possible too plug my sky router into this and then remote desktop too it from my laptop at work (dont want a monitor ect as no space).

Basically control it from laptop so i can access the internet and use it too download from web (free content of course).

If its plugged directly in too sky router via CAT 5 cable would the wireless Internet still be available...or would using the cable too connect it too router stop that.

Knowledge is seriously lacking on this kinda stuff.... :(

Any advice very welcome. :y

We sack people for accessing their home computers from work, so check with your workplace before attempting it.

We would all get the sack - I am about the only person who hasn't got home access from work.

This includes the boss and the office manager.

But then when I work from home I use work software on my home PC as it is per user and I am the same user. (OK if you want I'll ask the publishers to check)

Most software licences is per device, not per user. Borland used to be the exception.

I was on about accessing home  from work - thats what we sack for.  Accessing work from home (as long as its a work certified PC) is allowed.

Loads of good software - Martin Imber who runs XP Pro has Remote Desktop which all works well as well (and is probably the most secure).  However, I guess his company have settled on Netsupport, and thats what is allowed through firewall.

with remote admin you have to allow it pst the firewall
i use it and have no problems
its all secure passwords needed and user names

ive fitted it on a few computers even my dad's
so instead of me having to go back and forth to there house i just log on with remot admin and sort it from my comp

I doubt a company would allow opening of its firewalls for such a tool ;)

As to secure - is it?  Remember the (in)famous 'secure' VNC product that had a security flaw that allowed anyone to bypass the security?  Don't assume a product is secure because they claim it is ;)

Yes we use NSM for remote control - works with VGA graphics (a lot don't) and well we have a big enough licence for it.

My BT Homehub seems to block incoming calls but then I never come onto home PC from office and my wife is well trained enough if there is a problem

NSM is available for lots of formats tempted to install Linux on the PS3 and try the Linux version

you'll need to set up the NAT/port forwarding, as being BT Total Broadband, you won't have RIPE addresses on the devices behind the hub
