Hello all.
Some of you may have noticed that I've only recently joined up to the OOF.
I've always liked the Omega, probably as it reminds me of old school, engine North South, and Rear wheel drive.
Anyhow about x4 wks ago, I finally took the plunge and got myself what I thought was at the time an ideal car.
A Facelift CD Auto model, full service history, very clean and tidy car which I thought I could see myself owning for some time. ::).
When I got it, I had to get my friend to drive it back to my place, and then again to the company that converts cars for disabled drivers, as I have a leg disability. Had to get it converted for my use - Hand controls & the pedals converted to flip up for when I'm driving at a cost of £720 before I could even use the thing ! :-?.
And before I bought it there was nothing wrong, as my mate and I checked over everything as I was paranoid with it having so many toys on it. And the couple of journeys that my mate used it for to make sure all was definitely okay, there was nothing untoward.
And now I feel my bubbles burst :( :(.
So far in the x2 wks of actually driving the thing myself, which started off excitedly with plans for it, I'm now beginning to think that its a piece of **** engineering :(.
1. Key remote started to decide when it wanted to work (wasn't battery).
2. Had to get a replacement key and remote fob and reprogramming, as immobiliser started acting up.
3. The electronic air con I think is on its way out.
4. Had an electronic fault (dash warning light) within two days that I started to drive it - Though hoping that's fixed now.
5. Found out that the steering drop arm now needs replacing.
6. The brake discs have become warped (I'm not excessive with them).
7. Ohh... and today, been told there's a broken rear spring.
8. this line is for the next thing that's going to go wrong !!!!.
I know that there's going to be one or two thing that need doing when you get a new set of wheels, but honestly, this has to be the worst (and most expensive) car I've ever had in a short space of time, and beginning to wonder if I've got a dud one after all ?.
I did have a rare automatic Astravan that I customised before getting the Omega, had that for 4yrs, and not once did any light ever light up on the dash for anything (yes it was plugged in for any smart****s out there ?!), and never a breakdown in all that time, rain, snow, short or extreemmmmly long journeys.
Wish I'd not got rid of it now :'(.
But the Omega, well I'm not confident going up to 50 miles in one journey, let alone a 300 mile one (which supposed to be doing over this easter !).
Am I being over negative, or does anyone think there maybe a light at the end of the tunnel ?.
I've even considered getting rid of my facelift, and getting a preface lift Omega - base model, something with no electronic air con (how nice it would be to have dials instead !), and something like a GLS, or police spec one, otherwise known as a no frills one.
No luxuries, but more of a simple no messing, solid car. And then get all the disabled drivers stuff swapped over.
To be honest, because how I feel at the moment, I know someone with a V6 3.0L converted Vectra, which has been reported as being sound and extremely reliable. And I'm seriously thinking of ditching the Omega, and going for the Vectra :o
Anyone else out there in OOF land that has gone through what I'm going through at the moment, and if so, what kept you from getting rid of.
Well that's me done, and got my piece out of the way.
Sorry chaps, and ladies, but really had enough of my car at the mo.
So how's your day been then !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-?

At least with this site we should be able to make the issues cheaper (hopefully) to resolve. eg, likely Martin Imber could have repaired your old keyfob. http://theboy.omegaowners.com for Tech2 jobs.
Consider updating your profiles with your location etc - nearby people may be able to assist either physically or by giving advice :y
-
as TB says update your profile as im sure somebody can help you, we like to pride ourselves as being a helpful bunch :y, not only that we dont charge garage hourly rates either ;D, so chin up smegmatt & just put it down to bad luck [& i thought it was only me ;)]

I do know how you feel. I got mine in November '08.
I went right over it when I went to see it and found it to be spot on. All it needed was a new door mirror.
Since then. Started wearing the outer edges of the front tyres. Broke a rear spring. To put the icing on the cake, gearbox failed.
All of these problems have been sorted through OOF. Either via the forum or by members in person.
Even with the faults, I do rate the Mig highly and also the great members of this forum. :y :y
-
Thing is -- whatever car you buy -- it all depends on how it was looked after by the previous owner .... but .. with the help of the forum, once the Omega is up and running sweet, it should stay that way. Don't give up on her yet --- :y
-
I think it is fair to say that without this forum, the practical advice and support it gives, there would be a lot more Migs in the scrap yard..

i bought a cdx last yr and had to spend so much on it in the yr, withing 2 weeks new rad, new cam gaskets, hbv and so on. so chin up and dont be disheartened :y :y

My 1999 tourer estate. Bought on ebay for good price. If I had to spend another £400 to £500 to get it spot on, felt satisfied. So far, spent about £350, including about £100 worth of tools. (18 year old son has pilfered or ruined tools that have taken me 25 to 30 years to collect). Reckon got another £150 to £200 to spend and about 3 days f work, tinkering etc. to have a quality, solid and triffic car.
They're worth it. Comfort, power and a statement. :y
-
I had to replace a few components in the last few months - wear and tear - but after I have done this apart from a gear box oil change nothing left to do but servicing.
And I could have repaired that keyfob - they just need new switches, the 3 button ones self destruct at about 5 years old

My Dad said that to me, now I have experienced the same thing ::) ::) ::)
When the eldest stepson got his own house with his girlfriend we bought them lots of gardening bits and pieces for his birthday, so we could get ours back ::) ::) :y

I know how you feel .... bought mine nearly a year ago and after about 2 months things started going wrong .... dis pack , catalyst failed , rear exhaust box , breathers and assosiated oil leaks , rear springs , air flow meter , cam sensor and permenent engine light with catalyst code again ....and now i think my disks are starting to warp as i feel a slight judder through the steering on braking and im sure im getting a vibration at 60 + mph at the rear although i hope thats just a rear wheel needing balanced :-/.... this thing has cost me a fortune to keep going .... i dont think its as good as the 1997 2.o ltr GLS model i had before although i had a few problems with that before the cam belt snapped after only 14'000 miles after it was replaced .... maybe i should have taken that as a warning :'( :'( ... why havn't i replaced it ... because i cant afford too or that may have been an option :'( :'( :'( .... must admit im not very confident to go on a long journey but that may come back if it behaves for a while :y

Agree....My 05 plate Merc Viano is in today for a new anti roll bar....apparently the cause of a clunking noise its had for a few months.

A car is only as good as its last owner.
And that is true of any car.
Suspension and braking components are wear and tear items, they will fail and with the pot holed roads today they go more often sadly.

Too true, I always expect to spend alot of money on a new car getting it to my standards. Both my previous Omegas had new wishbones, steering idler, drop links, cambelt and tensioners, complete fluids change, water pump and breathers cleaned within a few weeks of buying it. That way I know its right and will serve me well and for many years or until I sell it ::)

Ive spent 500 quid on my mv6 as from 2 months ago when i bought it.
Its all just down to maintanance and whats expected in a 8 year old car to get it mint.
Its worth getting your bits done , try emailing a few members on here, im sure they can help you.
If you PM Loo-Knee on here they will be happy to help depending on how far you want to drive for repairs.
They did cracking jobs on mine and a mates! ;)

This thread just goes to show the spirit of this forum.
Smegmat - None of the stuff you listed is that serious, there are folks on here who can help you source the parts, and quite a few of us have Vx trade cards so getting genuine parts cheap shouldn't be a problem.
The car is worth it mate. Keep her. :)

Since September I have spent around £1600 on my car.
Includes tyres and some body work though
-
I bought mine in December 08 and have spent nearly 600 getting it back in order and still needs work.
work already done
Replaced Rad
Replaced Cam Gasket covers
All breathers replaced
Cambelt kit replaced
Work needs to be done
New wishbones required
Headlight & taillight needs replacement
Body work isn't great- so if I end up replacing that It will not be worth it..
-
Cars are a whole in the ground in which you throw good money after bad.
However, having said that once you've got those bits fixed I'm sure it will calm down. Chin up. For the money they are excellent value in comparison. Just weather it for a short while and you'll be smiling. [smiley=vrolijk_1.gif]

if it wasnt for this forum i wouldnt of had a clue what to do, god knows how much it would of cost in labour and thats not going to vaux. and if, they know what they are doing and didnt bullshite me and charge me for work not needing doing. i would of probably scrapped the car long time ago

Hello All.
Just wanted to thank everyone who gave me support in my depressing thread :-?.
It was appreciated to know that there are people out there that took the time to type out something, no matter whether it was short or long.
I'm trying to think positively - honest ! :) .
I've gotten the Spanner through the car icon on the dash sorted out, turns out that some of the recirculating pipes from the rocker cover to the throttle housing were starting to get blocked, so I'm assuming that possible an air or exhaust sensor was being thrown out as the mixture was wrong.
The key thing, well had to get one from the dealers, yes I know what you're all going to say !!!!. Its a long story why I did, and it wasn't that expensive for the blip (remote), not as expensive as you think, I did have a look on ebay, but they've gone expensive on there for that kind of item, even on ebay people are paying near enough dealer prices, think I'm joking take a look yourself ! :o. Least I have 12mths warranty on it though, whereas on ebay you don't.
Can't see any breaks in the rear spring as I was told by the dealer, and a friends friend who owns a garage / repair workshop is going to double check for me soon, though I've ordered a -40mm spring kit for it, as it needs doing pronto, as I'm supposed to be off for an easter break soon - no pressure there then ;D .
As for the electronic air con, I'm still not sure about that, I may put a thread on to see if anyone as converted to a simple dial set-up, as per Mk3/4 Astra / corsa, etc ?.
Just got a quote for Vented and cross drilled brake discs (£112) pair. Not sure if that's dear yet, as haven't looked else where, but they feel they will need doing sometime.
Anyhow, enough of me at the moment.
Just wanted to express my gratitude to those that did reply. And all I can say is watch this space, as in a month or two I maybe still here with the Omega, or may have scattered all of the Omega parts (chainsawed >:( ) across the garden as a sort of art-deco thing !!!!! :o :o We'll have to see.
Thanks everyone. Hopefully things will pick up with the car.
Your a fine bunch :y :y
Look at you All, looking all modest ::) ::) ::) !!!!!!!!!!.

IIRC, a genuine set of front discs and pads on trade club are around £80.
Are you sure about 40mm lower springs? Probably will detract from ride comfort although will look cool. ;)
-
Hi.
£80 for discs and pads doesn't sound so bad, but I'm assuming there is postage on top of that, and the weight would probably bring it up to the quote I've been given ?!.
I wanted to upgrade, as I want as good as brakes as I can, and as Omega's seem to be know to warp , I thought by going cross drilled as well as vented may help take the heat off them, and be less likely to warp so quick.
Mind you as heavy as the car is, its no surprising how much it takes to stop them ! :o .
As for the -40mm spring, I like a more sporty ride, and have uprated the suspension on every car I've had. And to be honest, although it is comfy in its ride, its a little too soft for me, more so than I first thought. Plus I'd like something that feels more sure footed.
I knew when I bought it, it would be softer being a top executive spec car, but it wallows just too much for me ! :-?.
Thanks for letting me know of the info though.
