Mmm my car going into Vx on saturday for a new O2 rear sensor ... i went back today to complain about my P0420 code and they say the rear O2 sensor readings are all over the place ..... im not convinced :-/

That does break all in reality.....yes, it should be reporting a constant output but does nothing more than check if the pre-cat is still working (which is of little importnace to the operation).
Its the front sensor that supports mixture control.

I dont have a pre-cat on mine ... just one sensor before and one after the main cat .... :-/

Ahhh.....cheap horrible nasty awful tacky tinny after market job then!
As said, the post cat lambda does bugger all for mixture control.....so if its results are all over the place then the cat is goosed (given that its a cheap horrible nasty awful tacky tinny after market job then)
I assume that you are not having to pay for this piss poor diag!

The one and only P0420.

150 quid is quite steep to....80+vat trade club and about 120 mins to fit.

Which is cat efficiency!
Which points at a shite cat.
If it was me doing the diag I ould be looking at a live data plot....maybe they have.
Thing is that the fact its giving a changing reading sudgests the sensor is working.....they normaly flat line when not working or respond slowly (there should be no change on a post cat sensor)
Did the code clear for a period after the cat was changed or did it make no odds?

I could have just about got the front and rear "direct fit " ones for that price ..... £120 for the sensor but they will only take £25 to fit >:(

It did stay away for about 3 weeks after they changed the cat . Thing is it didnt cost me for the cat as it was done under one of those Scotsure warrantys but that has now expired , but they would have been paid to fix something which they obviously havn't fixed , so do i have any comeback and demand a fix . Should i be paying at all :-/

To me, you should not be paying as they have received cash to fix a fault which ahs not gone away!
Are you able to check the colours of thewiring to the O2 sensor (on the car loom) to ensure they connected it up right......three of the wires are thesame colour but, the fourth is different.
The rear should have a white with brown strip
The front mixture control one should have a Brown with white stripe

Well i didn't get the sensor changed after all as i mentioned to Vx that i shouldn't have to pay as they have not repaired the fault they were paid for . They then took a bit of a huff and started ranting on about conciquencial damage etc and i would need to pay . They were then told to forget it >:( >:(.
I then phoned Vx UK and was informed by Vx UK because i didn't actually pay for the cat replaced by the warranty the new cat doesnt come with a warranty :o :o ... after a brief argument on the phone i told her it should have at least 12 months warranty whether i paid for it or not to which she replied rather cheekilly " no it doesnt ".
I'll never have any work done by them again >:( >:( >:(
