Title: Skype
Post by: Turk on 13 April 2009, 20:31:34
Decided to try the Skype thingumywotsit this afternoon.
Downloaded Skype and bought a Logitech QuickCam E3500 webcam with built in mic for £19.99 at Maplins. No need for headphones and mic, I'm using my PC speakers

Robert's your fathers brother  :y

Just had a video call with my mate in Patagonia, and I must say I'm quite impressed.  Clear, smooth running (for want of a better description) images and the audio quality is excellent.

The installation process runs through your e-mail contacts and sets up any contacts that have Skype. Only three of my contacts use Skype.
It is so easy to set up and use, don't know why it's not more popular.

More popular than you think.

A lot of us probably use it on here.  There is an option in the UserCP to add a Skype link.

I prefer to use a proper VoIP service, but Skype has a place.

Saying that, I've not used my Skype in ages

It has fundamental flaws, thats the reason I don't use it.

PC has to be on to receive calls.
The gateways are fabulously expensive to use

Yup, and something else to my Skype.

Hence I tend to use other VoIP services.

Be aware, unless you have an Apple gayPhone, you haven't got unlimited data, so it may not be 'free' ;)

yes.

Also, Skype on mobile networks isn't that great often - VoIP cannot deal with high latency

Skype is great for videocalls over the internet but only if you have a fast connection. It's defitely better than Live messenger and yahoo messenger, but it needs a faster connection.
My girlfriend lives abroad and we use these things to keep in touch every day. Her upload speed is quite low so we found out that afer several atempts the Live messenger is definitely better in this situation.
BUT my brother lives in France and has a good connection so with him I use Skype. The quality of the sound and video transfer is quite impressive

i use skype on Windows mobile, its better than the iPhone version as it allows calls to go over 3G/GPRS were as its only WiFi on the iPhone

Its usefull for IM on the phone too as well as calls, you get the standard latancy problems with calls and can cut out, but considering skype to skype is free it aint half bad.
